Basketball was invented by James Naismith
in Springfield, Massachusetts.

-In 1891, Naismith was asked to come up
with an indoor game that offers fewer
injuries and helps keep athletes in shape in
cold weather.
-He came up with a 9-on-9 game that
involved shooting a soccer styled ball into a
peach basket. The first public basketball
game was played in Springfield,
Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.

-In 1895 the number was occasionally set at
five by mutual consent; the rules stipulated
five players two years later, and this number
has remained ever since.
- In 1893 Canada was the first country
outside the United States to play the game.
Basketball was introduced in France.
-In 1894 it was introduced to England, and
soon after in Australia, China, and India.

In 1895-1896 the points for making a basket
(goal, or field goal) has been reformed on
what we use today.
January 18, 1896 - The first college
basketball game with 5 players on each side
was played by the university of Chicago and
the University of Iowa. University of
Chicago won, 15-12.

1912-1913 - the development of retrieving
the ball has been change to the nets and it
was now open at the bottom.

In June 18, 1932 International Basketball
Federation (FIBA) a real international
organization was formed.
In 1949 National Basketball Association
(NBA) was formed after the Basketball
Association of America (BAA) merged with
the rival National Basketball League (NBL).

War II, the game's popularity exploded at all
levels. Given a timely mix of spectacular
players such as Earvin Johnson, Julius
Erving, Larry Bird, And Michael Jordan

successful and led the movement for the
inclusion of basketball in the Olympic
games.
Clara Baer introduced basketball at the H.
Sophie Newcomb College for Women in
New Orleans, influenced the women's style

: The game of basketball as it is known
today was created by Dr James Naismith. Dr
James Naismith is a Canadian of Scottish
physical education instructor at Young
Men's Christian Association (YMCA)
International Training School now known as
Springfield College Massachusetts.

: The story goes like this, Upon the request
of his boss, Naismith was tasked to create an
indoor sports game that offers lesser/fewer
injuries, That time classic American gridiron
football was still popular but playing it can
cause injuries that’s why Naismith was
asked to create a game that causes fewer
injuries. He was also asked that the game
should help athletes keep in shape in cold
weather.
: The game was consisted of peach baskets
and a soccer style ball. He divided his class
of eighteen into two teams of nine players
each. The objective of the game was to
throw the basketball into the fruit baskets
nailed to the lower railing of the gym
balcony. The first public basketball game
was played in Springfield, Massachusetts,
on March 11, 1892.

: From the originally 9-on-9 game it was
reduced into 5-on-5 by mutual consent and it
has remained ever since.
: Since Naismith and five of his original
players were Canadians, it is not surprising
that Canada was the first country outside the
United States to play the game. After that
the game was introduced to France in 1893,
1894 in England and soon after in Australia,
China, and India.

: the points for making a basket (goal, or
field goal) were reduced from three to two,
and the points for making a free throw (shot
uncontested from a line in front of the basket
after a foul had been committed) were
reduced from three to one.
: The University of Chicago won the first college
basketball game with five on a side with neither
team using a substitute.

: In 1894 the first basketball was marketed.
It was laced, measured close to 32 inches or
about 4 inches larger than the soccer ball.
: in 1912-1213 a hoop of iron with a
hammock style of basket and an opened
bottom was marketed. Originally a ladder,
then a pole, and finally a chain fastened to
the bottom of the net was used to retrieve a
ball after a goal had been scored.

: World basketball was growing, but it was
on June 18, 1932 that a real international
organization was formed, to coordinate
tournaments and teams: Argentina,
Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia,
Portugal, Romania and Switzerland founded
the International Basketball Federation
(Fédération internationale de basketball
amateur, FIBA) in Geneva. Its work was
fundamental for the first inclusion of
basketball in the Berlin Olympic Games in
1936.The first Olympic title was won by the
U.S. national team
: The Basketball Association of America
(BAA) was founded on June 6, 1946, in
New York City.[29] The league adopted the
name National Basketball Association
(NBA) in 1949 after merging with the rival
National Basketball League (NBL). As of
the early 21st century, the NBA is the most
significant professional basketball league in
the world in terms of popularity, salaries,
talent, and level of competition.

television exposure, but with the advent of
cable television, especially during the 1980s,
Given a timely mix of spectacular players—
such as Earvin (“Magic”) Johnson, Julius
Erving (“Dr. J”), Larry Bird, and Michael
Jordan—and the greatly increased exposure,
basketball moved quickly to the forefront of
the American sporting scene, alongside such
traditional leaders as baseball and football.
