LESSON 4 & 5 WEEK 13 & WEEK 14: THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF ARNIS

Description of the Lesson:

In this lesson ,you will know the rules and regulations of Arnis.

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
a. Discuss the rules and regulations of the game;
b. Explain scoring and penalties in Arnis;
c. Value the importance of rules and regulations in arnis; and
e. Define disqualification, injuries and time outs in arnis

LESSON PROPER/DISCUSSION/SELECTION

A. Conduct of the Tournament


1. The conduct of the competition shall be on a two out of three set system, each set shall be held
maximum of 2 minutes.

B. Scoring
1. A score shall mean a strike delivered to a specific body point and is counted upon confirmation by the
two or at least one of the judges, and is simultaneously recorded on the scoreboard.
2. A player who scores the first five points in a shall get the credit and is declared the winner upon making
two straight win sets.
3. A legitimate strikes is given a score/points if it is delivered to a specific body point in correct form, that
is – a right timing, correct postures with art, distance and attitude.
4. A thrust to body points C and E (abdominal and leg areas) will be considered a point, provided that the
requirements for a legitimate thrust is emphasized.
5. A disarming execution is considered a point. Two disarming executions automatically declares the
player who executed the disarming the winners for a set match, even without making the required five
points to win.
6. A score is recorded on the scoreboard by the judge himself who raises the flag that correspond to the
color designated to the player who scored a point

C. Draw Score
In the event that the scores are the same at the end of the set match, the basis for declaring the winner shall
be decided through the following;
1. Aggressive
2. Major Advance Technique
3. Artistic Delivery
4. Attitude
5. Best Time
D. Body Points
1. Left and right side of the head crowns
2. Left and right arms and collar
3. Chest portion
4. Left and right armpit to thigh
5. Full length of Left and right leg

E. Penalties
Contestants are given penalties for violations of the tournament rules and regulations
The following violations if committed are considered as foul;
1. Thrust to body point A (temple, Face and Crown)
2. Strike to the groin
3. Blocking with the use of arms
4. Butting, kicking, kneeling, elbowing, hand butting, boxing, sweeping, spitting, giving remarks, non-
combativeness, other actions inimical to the tournament rules and regulations and code of sportsmanship.
5. A prolonged hold to an opponent’s cane however the grab may be considered, provided that it is
immediately followed by a legitimate strike or disarming technique.
6. Multiple strikes to one body points will not be given succeeding points, and will be considered a foul
nevertheless, a point shall be given for the first or initial strike provided it conforms to the criteria for
legitimate strike.
7. A player who steps on the outside line or goes out playing area boundary line.

8. A player who commits three (3) fouls will be declared a loser by the referee for that particular round.

F. Disarming
1. A player who loses grip of his/her cane during the game is a violation.
2. A disarming violation shall be given to the players and shall be indicated in the scoreboard.
3. The player who is disarmed twice in a set automatically loses that set.

G. Disqualification
1. A player is disqualified based on the following conditions
2. A player who commits a dangerous intentional foul that inflicts injury or not to the other player is
automatically disqualified and declared the loser by the referee.
3. Any disruptive action or behavior of the player and/or his teammate, coach, relatives or friends which
breaks the spirits of the sports, shall be given a points deduction after warning has been given on the plare
involved.
4. If for one reason or mother, one of the contestant is disqualifies, the other player shall be declared the
winner.

H. Forfeiture
1. Decisions based on the forfeiture should be forwarded to the technical committee.
The contestants who forfeits his/her game during a match shall be declared the loser.

I. Injuries
When an injuries occurs during the contest and it cannot be continued the decision of the judges shall be
based on the following grounds;
1. When an injured party is responsible for the injury the other party wins
2. When the injury is caused by the other party, the injured party wins
3. When the responsibility of the injury cannot be determined the judges shall base it on the score.
4. When the injury is caused by a legal blow the injured party loses.
5. When the injury is caused by an illegal blow the injured party wins
6. Only the medical doctors can determine and make decisions as to fitness of the injured player to resume
or discontinue with round.

J. Default
1. A player who does not present himself/herself in the playing area after 15 minutes from the schedules
time shall automatically forfeit the games. The referee shall make the decisions upon confirmation by the
technical committee. The winner by the default in this match shall enter the playing area and do the
courtesy.

K. Time Outs
Only the contest referee may stop the time for the following reasons;
1. Giving warning
2. injury Occurs
3, Declaring winners
4. Disarming is executed
5. Judges request for time out
6. Consultation with judges
7. Changing and/or fixing of soiled uniforms, broken equipment such as headgear, cane and etc.
8. End of the set

L. Courtesy
1. Courtesy is done by placing right hand with the cane over the left chest, upon entering the playing area,
contestants must do the courtesy to the audience and officials, together with the referee. Finally, courtesy
must give to the opponent. This shall be done BEFORE AND AFTER every set match.

M. Matching / Pairing
1. Blind matching/ pairings shall be adopted in most cases where the number of participants will allow it.
This shall be done at least a day before the tournament. Representatives from the respective teams
concerned shall be invited to observed the matching/pairing.

N. Complaints or Protests
1. Any complaints or protests must be made in writing addressed to the jury of appeals and forwarded
immediately after the match to the officials table. Any action made otherwise shall be mollified.
