OBJECTIVES
The Faculty of Law welcomes and invites you to study at
the Faculty, as it promises you a unique and worthwhile
experience in legal education. The Faculty’s programmes
offer a very challenging and intellectually stimulating
experience. The UNAM Faculty of Law treasures excellences
and strives to attain this standard in its teaching, research
and community areas. Through these activities, it has
monumentally contributed to the building of a sound legal
system and a constitutional and democratic culture in the
Republic of Namibia.
FACULTY STRUCTURE & LOCATION
The Faculty of Law consists of three departments namely:
Commercial law; Public law and Jurisprudence and Private
and Procedural Law. In addition, two centres fall under the
Faculty, namely, the Human Rights and Documentation
Centre (HRDC) and the Justice Training Centre (JTC).
UNDERGRADUTE Programmes
The Faculty of Law is based at the Main Campus in
Windhoek, and offers the following undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes:
DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES
• Diploma in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution
• Diploma Paralegal Studies
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
• To register for a diploma programme, a candidate
must hold an NSSC or equivalent qualification,
obtained in not more than three (3) examination
sittings, with a minimum score of 22 in five (5) subjects
on the UNAM Evaluation Scale.
• English is a compulsory subject and should have been
obtained at English as First/Second Language NSSC
Ordinary level, symbol D or higher.
• A candidate can be admitted to the programme
through the University’s Mature Age Entry Scheme,
with a pass of 60% average in all papers.
The mode of teaching consists of face-to-face lectures,
and tutorials. The curriculum for the diplomas consists of
two years full-time study (face-to-face, in the evening),
leading to a diploma at level 5 of the National
Qualifications Framework (NQF). The diplomas provide
access to the LLB degree.
DEGREE PROGRAMMES
• Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
• A minimum of 30 points in 5 subjects (including English)
on the Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC)
• At least a B symbol or better in English (NSSC-O Level)
as a Second Language or higher.
• Recognised equivalent qualification.
• Applicants should pass the UNAM Mature Age Entry
Examination with Grade 12 and a pass in all papers
with 65% average.
The curriculum for the LLB degree consists of four years full-
time study, leading to a professional degree at level 8 of
the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The mode
of teaching consists of face-to-face lectures, tutorials
and legal aid clinic practicals. The Faculty of Law does
not offer any field of specialisation within this qualification,
which means that all modules are compulsory, with certain
electives in the final year of the programme.
POSTGRADUATE Programmes
The Faculty of Law offers the following postgraduate
programmes:
Master of Laws (by Thesis only) (LL.M)
• Doctor of Philosophy in Law (Ph.D)
