LABORATORY MANAGEMENT: THEORIES OF MOTIVATION

LABORATORATORY MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY I

ACTIVITY II. BEING AWARE OF THE OPPORTUNITY

William Edward Deming, a prominent American researcher, similarly to Japanese, he believed that
management staff and all employees should be involved in the process of continuous improvement.
He created 14 principles that later became the basis of the philosophy of quality in the organization
and continuous improvement cycle PDCA (Plan - Do - Check - Act), called the Deming wheel/cycle.

Deming cycle is a sequence of actions that aim at improvement. This cycle is also designed to solve
quality problems and implement new solutions. PDCA model is extremely versatile and it can be
successfully used in any type of business.

LABORATORY MANAGEMENT: THEORIES OF MOTIVATION

• PLAN (WHAT SHOULD IT BE LIKE?)

- Define objectives; action planning
- Plan ahead for change
- Analyze and predict the results
• DO (WHAT SHOULD WE DO AND HOW SHOULD WE DO IT?)
- Implement actions
- Execute the plan, taking small steps in controlled circumstances
• CHECK (WHAT WAS ACHIEVED?)
- Check the achievement of objectives
- Study the results
• ACT (WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO BE DONE?)
- Identify room for improvement
- Take action to standardize or improve the process.

The Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle is a helpful tool that can assist your team in solving
problems much more efficiently. PDCA has a number of significant advantages,
including the encouragement of continuous improvement of people and processes. It
allows your team to experiment with potential solutions on a small scale and in a
controlled environment and used to solve problems and to improve organizational
processes.
