DELIVERING a significant ad-
vance in embedded computing
and leading a new wave in Arm
based computability is Blue Chip
Technology with its new RE2
SBC. The development is built
around the embedded Arm Cortex
A8 with the Omap 3 processing
core. It also integrates a C64x, up
to 520MHz, DSP.
This architecture, says the
company, gives the RE2 the edge
in performance per Watt. The
compact design is optimised for
graphics and computer intense
tasks, with target applications
ranging from HD multimedia,
image and voice processing to
data compression and decompres-
sion. This board is tiny and with a
low power demand, handhelds and
mobile applications will clamour
for its services.

Predictable IC Outlook Shows Growth
FEBRUARY’s monthly global semiconduc-
tor report from Future Horizons shows
no serious data revisions with results right
where expected. Year on year IC unit
growth in December was 8.9%, with a 3.5%
growth in ASPs yielding a respectable dou-
ble digit value growth of 12.8%. And this,
says the organisation, is on the back of a
weak Q4 memory market that saw ASPs
fall 13.1% compared to Q3, 2010.
“Yearly growth against 2009 weighed in
at 31.8%,” says CEO Malcolm Penn, “hit-
ting US$298.3 billion, just shy of the elusive
US$300 billion threshold. The market is
right where we said it would be at our re-
cent 2011 Forecast seminar and we reiter-
ate our position that 2011 will be a good
year for the industry.”
And it’s not just semiconductors that are
off to a good start! The connector industry is tight as a drum too, says
Penn. Orders in December 2010 were up 13.3% against December 2009,
with full year orders up 29.3% on 2009, but down sequentially 11.1%
from November 2010. The comparable data for sales was +18.7%, +28.4
and -13.7% according to www.BishopReport.com.
There’s strong demand too for mobile, server and graphics DRAM.

laser systems for production engineering, green

comprise the trade fair, with the World of Photonics
Congress devoted to resource efficiency and ad-
dressing growth markets in the industry.
In future, laser technology will enable increasing
numbers of processes in more efficient and precise
photovoltaic module manufacturing. Production
processes such as edge coating removal on solar
modules are now standard in laser technology. And
processes such as solar module soldering and weld-
ing, and solar cell edge insulation using ultra-short
pulsed lasers are already the norm. You can see so-
lutions in these areas at Laser World of Photonics
from the likes of 3D-Micromac, Chemnitz, InnoLas
Systems, Krailing, LIMO Lissotschenko Mikrooptik,
Dortmund, Newport Spectra-Physics, Darmstadt,
Schott, Mainz and more.
Nanosecond laser pulsing is now widely used but
is not suitable where it is likely to cause overheat-
ing mproblems, even with its short pulsing fre-
quency. Picosecond and femtosecond lasers are
thus coming to the fore and with its ‘cold’ material
processing, it will move on to develop so called pat-
terning of highly sensitive CI(G)S modules incorpo-
rating copper, indium, gallium and selenium.
Photovoltaics manufacturing
The World of Photonics Congress, taking place
from May 22 to 26, accompanies the trade fair with
scientific contribution and practical talks on the lat-
est applications. Its programme includes confer-
ences and events on material processing: the
Lasers in Manufacturing Conference is being or-
ganised by the German Scientific Laser Society.

healthy 10%,” notes Penn, “with 3.9GB the
average DRAM content per box. New ca-
pacity and die shrinks are putting near-
term pressure on over-supply and pricing
but there are now moves afoot from Elpida
and others to start raising prices.”
To gain price advantage, DRAM vendors
are actively adjusting their supply in favour
of mobile from commodity DRAM, Penn
points out, given the current strong de-
mand in the smartphone and tablet PC
markets, with a 1GB per box average
DRAM content.
Future Horizons sees server demand
continuing to be the other star segment,
not just in unit demand but in content per
box as well, and estimated to average
around 30GB in 2011. This will drive a
50~60% increase in server DRAM demand.
Finally, graphics demand for specialty DRAM is also very strong,
states Penn, driven by the rapid take-off of 3D TV, with continuing
strong growth in Blue-Ray DVD. The overall DRAM industry is thus
gradually diversifying from manufacturing mainly commodity DRAM to
diversified products such as mobile DRAM, server basis DRAM, spe-

rate NXP's near field communica-
tions, NFC, PN544 technology into
ZTE handsets. ZTE plans to in-
clude NFC chips into its rapidly ex-

forces in a commercial LTE con-
tract to commence deployment of
the region's widest LTE network

Ohmite has introduced its SH
shunt resistor. It’s the first in a
new series from the company,
providing a range capability of
100~300A in a sturdy metal clad
housing.
Six devices in the range all
deliver 0.50% tolerance with
convenient, 400mm long insu-
lated wire sense leads for accu-
rate current monitoring. SH is
supplied in a metal clad housing
for safety, says the company,

Shunts like these resistors are
typically used when current flow
is too large to be directly meas-
ured by an ammeter so a Man-
