data mining is the future of the information economy
for humans, says Dr Steve Evans, chief scientist for
the London-based research institute.
Evans said such research in deep learning techniques
would offer a new approach to solving complex problems.
"If everything you know about deep learning turns
out to be wrong, people in the future will be trying to learn something to solve other things," he told Reuters.
"What does this mean for our economy?" he would go
on. "These are very different domains - human, machine and data mining."
A high rate of failure
Dr Evans said the main problem of learning to do
some big tasks quickly was with the human mind.
"People have very large brains", he said. "They have
to learn something from the experiences of their surroundings. And while there might be a high rate of failure with those results, there's a high rate of failure with those of their own experience.
"You are a small fraction of all people who are
working on computer vision. You have this whole set of assumptions that make sense. You have that assumption and you do the math. It's very difficult to learn how to come up with this type of data, because as of about 2000 there were very few people with the mathematical ability."
The researchers used algorithms inspired by big data
in their research to predict the outcome of what scientists in the UK and abroad called the 'deep learning revolution'.
