"The Social Cancer," originally titled "Noli Me Tangere," is a novel written by

Filipino political activist and author José Rizal. This book, which was published in 1887,
eventually became the first thing that comes to mind whenever someone asks me what literary
work I appreciate the most. Apart from the reason that this literary work is well-written by our
national hero, I must say that the history behind itself is a masterpiece alone.

Noli me Tangere, as we all know, was regarded as one of the instruments that ignited
Filipino nationalism in the 1896 Philippine Revolution. Written in Spanish, it awoke
suppressed Filipino awareness and laid the foundation for aspirations to independence. The
novel's aim is to encourage patriotism and to embrace change in ourselves.
