WHAT’S MORE - ACTIVITY 3.1 COMPLETE ME!
 CONSTANCIO DE GUZMAN
Miguel Velarde was a musical director, conductor, and composer. In 1938, he wrote the popular song Dahil Sa
Iyo. In 1975, he received the Cultural Achievement Award in Popular Music from the Philippine Government Cultural

popular and heard even with today’s generation.

 CONSTANCIO DE GUZMAN

started working for movies. De Guzman became a music director as he was acknowledge as the “Dean of Filipino Movie

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED - ACTIVITY 3.2 YOU’RE THE BEST

At one instance or another, no Filipino can miss the song or lyrics of Levi’s Christmas songs namely  Ang Pasko
ay Sumapit, Dahil sa Iyo, and Buhat. Years have passed since it was released and yet, his songs remain popular for
Filipinos. Personally, after reading the brief backgrounds of composers from the 20 th century, I can say that Levi Celerio
is the best. There are various reasons why but some of those is how talented he is. We can’t deny the fact that he’ s a
creative songwriter, with more than 4,000 songs to his acclaim including Filipino folk, Christmas, and love songs that are
popular pieces. His songs treasure life, express nationalistic sentiments and complete grand philosophies. Indeed, he is
the philanthropist and humanitarian who is deeply concerned about the state of the world, for which he has great
compassion and idealism. Moreover, aside from being composer, Celerio is also poet and a film actor who appeared in
various Philippine films of the 1950s and 1960s and one of the Philippine National Artist in Literature and Music. And
most importantly, Celerio is a remarkable and resourceful person who used the LEAF as a musical instrument, which
made him made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
