What is it?
What is Smoking?

Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the resulting smoke breathed in to be tasted and
absorbed into the bloodstream. Most commonly the substance is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant which have been
rolled into small square of rice paper to create a small, round cylinder called “cigarette”.

Harmful Chemicals in Tobacco Products

Tobacco smoke contains many chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Breathing
even a little tobacco smoke can be harmful. Here are some of the most harmful.

Nicotine - a toxic colorless or yellowish oily liquid that is the chief active constituent of tobacco. It acts as a
stimulant in small doses, but in larger amounts blocks the action of autonomic nerve and skeletal muscle cells.
Nicotine is also used in insecticides.
Hydrogen cyanide - sometimes called prussic acid, is a chemical compound with the chemical formula HCN.
It is a colorless, extremely poisonous and flammable liquid that boils slightly above room temperature, at 25.6
°C (78.1 °F).
Formaldehyde - is a simple chemical compound made of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. All life forms –
bacteria, plants, fish, animals and humans – naturally produce formaldehyde as part of cell metabolism.
Lead - is a chemical element with the symbol Pb (from the Latin plumbum) and atomic number 82. It is a heavy
metal that is denser than most common materials. Lead is soft and malleable, and also has a relatively low
melting point.
Arsenic - is a chemical element with the symbol As and atomic number 33. Arsenic occurs in many minerals,
usually in combination with sulfur and metals, but also as a pure elemental crystal. Arsenic is a metalloid.
Ammonia - is a colorless gas with a distinct odor composed of nitrogen and hydrogen atoms. It is produced
naturally in the human body and in nature—in water, soil and air, even in tiny bacteria molecules.
Radioactive elements, such as uranium
Benzene - is a chemical that is a colorless or light yellow liquid at room temperature. It has a sweet odor and
is highly flammable. Benzene evaporates into the air very quickly. Its vapor is heavier than air and may sink
into low-lying areas.

Bad Effects of Smoking in the Body

There are a lot of negative effects of smoking cigarettes and tobacco to a person’s health. It is said and proven that
smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Smoking can also increase problem of the immune system and other kind of diseases.

 Asthma- a chronic disease which affects the airways.
 Cancer- a group of diseases which makes body cells grow uncontrollably.

Three Kinds of Smoke Produced by Cigarette Smoking

1. Mainstream smoke- refers specially to the smoke that a smoker directly inhales.
2. Side stream smoke- the smoke that comes out of the lighted end of a cigarette or pipe, is also called second-hand
smoke (SHS) or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), and it is more dangerous than mainstream smoke.
3. Third-hand smoke- smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings, pillow and other objects, is also called residual
tobacco smoke (RTS), settles along with dust and can last for months, and still contains harmful chemicals and
carcinogens.

Impact of Cigarette Smoking to the Family, Environment and the Community

Family- lighting up cigarette around them increases their risk of developing asthma and other breathing complications;
like coughs, shortness of breath, and even bronchitis. Children who grow up watching their parents or family members
who smoke are also more likely to become smokers as teens.
Environment- cigarette smoking causes environmental pollution by releasing toxic air pollutants into the atmosphere.
The cigarette butts also litter the environment and the toxic chemicals in the residues seep into soils and water.
Community- over time, second-hand smoke has been associated with serious health problems in non-smokers in the
community; lung cancer in people who have never smoked, these people in the community is at high risk of the negative
