Lesson
1 Gateway Drugs
Gateway drugs are legal drugs that non -drug user might try, which can lead him/her to
a more dangerous drugs such as Marijuana and Shabu.

According to the study dione by the National Youth Commission (NYC), two out of five
Filipino teenagers age 13-15 years old smoke cigarette. (Phil.Star.Com., March 16,
2012).Furthermore, a study conducted by an anti- tobacco group in the year 2011, Ten
Filipinos die every hour because of tabacco-related diseases,(Phil. Daily Inquirer, September
19, 2011.

There are harmful chemicals in cigarettes that can harm people. In studies conducted,
43 of the chemicals in a cigarettes are know carcinogens. Carcinogens are substances which
cause cancer. Nicotine, the addictive drugs increases the central nervous system activity. The
central nervous system controls all body organs like the heart, lungs, brain and processes like
heart rate, blood pressure rate, respiration rate and more.

There are three (3) smoke produced by cigarette smoking


1. Mainstream smoke – a smoke that the smoker directly inhales.
2. Side stream smoke or second hand smoke- smoke that comes out of the lighted
end of a cigarette or pipe that is more dangerous than mainstream smoke.
3. Third hand smoke/ Residual Tabacco smoke- smoke left for a longtime on sofa,
beddings, pillow and other objects. This smoke still contains harmful chemicals and
carcinogens.

Activity 2: Draw a Pathway
Materials: Pencil, Marker , long bond paper
Directions: On a bond paper, draw a gate on the lower leftside. Leading from your gate will be
pathways that will describe directions life will take. Draw these paths and write beside the
paths your goals and targets in life (present & future). These will enter the gate or not.

Activity 3: The Dangers With In

Materials: Bond Paper and Marker


Direction: Draw a cigarette stick on a bond paper. List several chemicals that you
you think are present in a cigarette stick. Write the chemicals around
the cigarette stick you have drawn

Activity 4: Write an Essay


Direction: Make a journal using your family pictures engaging in sports. If there is no family
pictures, make cut outs from any magazines.Make an essay on the healthy benefits of the
families engaging in sports

IV. What’s New?


Policies and Laws Regarding Cigarette Smoking
R.A. No. 9211, otherwise know as the “ Tabacco Regulation Act of 2003” is the law
governing tobacco production, distribution and use. Some of its important provisions are:
 Sec. 5 – Smoking Ban in Public places like schools, recreational facilities for persons
under eighteen years old, elevators and staireays, etc.0
 Sec. 9- Minimum Age Sells, under this act, it shall be unlawful for any retailer of
tabacco products to sell or distribute products to any minor (persons below 18 years of
age).
 Sec. 10- Sale of tabacco products within the School perimeters. The sale or distribution
of tabacco products is prohibited within one hundred meters from any point of the
perimetr of a school, public playground or other facility frequented particulary by minors.
Chapter 2, Article 5, Sec. 24 of R.A. No. 8749, also known as the “ Philippine Clean
Air Act of 1999.
 Smoking inside a public building or an enclosed public place including public place
including public vehicles and other means of transport or any enclosed area outside of
one’s private residence, private place of work or any duly designated smoking area is
hereby prohibited under this Act. This provision shall implemented by the Local
Government Units.``

Activity 5: Role Play


The class will divided into four (4) groups. Each group representative will draw lots for
the situation to role play.
Situation 1- Smoking inside the School
 You saw your classmates smoking in a concealed area inside the school.
Situation 2- Smoking in Government Offices
 While waiting for an important document to be released, you noticed that
there are some persons who are smoking inside the government agency
compound.
Situation 3- Smoking in Public Transportations
 You are riding a public utility jeepney and you noticed that the driver is
smoking
Situation4- Smoking in Restaurants
 While eating your lunch, some of the restaurant customers are smoking
cigarettes.

V.What is It?
Reflection:
Students/Learners will be instructed to reflect on the following:
1. Self- Reflection
If they are smokers, how would they feel about non- smoker’s right?How do you
assert this right?
2. Family Invovement
Ask your family about changes in the smoking policies at their work or school.
Report your findings in the class.
3. Community Involvement
Interview atleast five people in your community who quitted smoking. Prepare
personal information and questionnaire on how they quitted smoking.

Activity 6: Pledge Wall


Materials: Manila paper, cartolina, markers or crayons
Direction: Post your pledge wall on an easily seen /visible corner in your house. Make the
corners of Pledge wall colorful and artistic to attract people to write. These
people can be your family members, neighboors, friends and guest. Ask them
to
write on the Pledge Wall on what they can do to prevent and control cigarette
smoking and tobacco use.

Activity 7: Thank you Notes


Direction: Write thank you notes addressed to a person/ persons who said “No” to
smoking,
has stopped smoking or has helped in the advocacy of a smokeless community.
Hightlight your thank you notes on how they have contributed in making a
healthy
Environment and community

Alcohol – is a colorless, bitter-tasting substances that humans have been consuming


since the ancient time. It comes from plants that underwent fermentation, the
process of extracting alcohol from plant or fruit.
Example of fermented alcohol is beer. Beer is extracted from grains. On the
Other hand, wines are from grapes, and other fruits

Three Types of Alcohol


1. Isopropyl
2. Methanol
3. Ethanol

Isoprophyl and Methanol – are used in laboratories, poisonous and fatal if


taken
Ethanol – also called the Beverage Alcohol. When human consume this in
unregulated amount it may result to intoxication and alteration of the
Nervous system. Example; Gin, Wine, Beer, Rhum, Vodka, etc.

Alcohol if enters the blood stream, it goes in all parts of the body. The
main effect of alcohol drinking reflects on a person’s central nervous system
(CNS) The CNS controls one’s mental processes, memory, speech, learning
and decision making. It also affects a person’s senses, feelings, movements
and breathing.

The amount of alcohol that entered in the blood stream at a certain


period can be measured in percentages through Blood- Alcohol Concentration
(BAC) or most often called Blood Alcohol Level ( BAL). A BAC of 0.05 %
means there is five parts of alcohol per 10,000.00 part of blood in the body. A
0.3-0.5 % BAC could lead to coma, brain damages and death

 In a a long bond paper/Oslo, make a poster that shows the causes and
effects of alcohol drinking or cigarette smoking. Write a short
description about the poster you have made.
