Extended Learning Experience: Design Your Room Project • Congratulations! You’ve been given $10,000.00 to redo your room completely! This is your chance to design your dream room! You can design your room with any furniture you would like; however, you need to make sure everything fits and stays within your budget! Here’s some important information you need to know before starting your project: • Budget: $10,000.00 • Room Dimensions: 10 ft. by 12 ft. Learning Contract Extended Learning Experience Continued: Design Your Room Project • Budget: • You have a budget of $10,000.00. This means that you cannot spend any more than this amount. To keep track of your expenses, you will need to create a budget sheet that includes the item, the store it came from, the item price, and the amount of money you have left after purchasing it. Use your knowledge of adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers and decimals to help you with your budget. Be sure to see the budget template and sample budget for an example. • Room: • Your room will have the dimensions of 10 ft. by 12 ft. Before beginning designing your room, calculate the area of your floor. Use the graph paper provided to draw your room size and visualize your space. • Design: • Brainstorm ideas of what you want your room to look like. Look through catalogs provided or go to furniture websites like Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen to get inspiration. Think about furniture items you will need in your room, such as a bed, dresser, desk, nightstand, etc. Be sure to create a list of items you want in your room before researching them. • As you start selecting furniture items, be sure to calculate the area of each furniture piece. The dimensions of each piece will be listed on the website. Once you’ve found the area, draw it on your graph paper to visualize your space. As you select furniture pieces, please record it in your budget to ensure you have enough money. Learning Contract Extended Learning Experience Continued: • Submit to Miss Fox: • Once you have finished selecting furniture pieces and designing your space; you will need to turn in a few items to Miss Fox: your budget, graph paper with the layout of your room, and a visual display of the items you selected for your room. This visual display can be a poster, slideshow, website, or any other visual presentation. Timeline: 2 Weeks • Day 1: • Read project directions and ask Miss Fox any questions you may have about the project. • Create budget sheet layout. • You may use the one provided by Miss Fox or create your own. • Calculate room dimensions. • Draw room dimensions on graph paper. • Begin brainstorming ideas of furniture pieces needed and start finding room inspiration. • Day 2-6: • Search for furniture pieces of interest. • Find the dimensions of each furniture piece to make sure it will fit in your room. • Keep track of each furniture piece in your budget to make sure you have enough money. • Draw each furniture piece in your graph paper to visualize your space. Learning Contract Timeline: 2 Weeks • Day 7: • Finalize budget: • Make sure all of your furniture items are listed in your budget. • Make sure all calculations are correct within your budget. Double-check your math! • Figure out the total amount of money that you have left. • Finalize graph paper visual: • Make sure all of your furniture items and the room layout are drawn out on your graph paper. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy but ensures that you have enough space for each item. • Double check to make sure the dimensions of each item are correct. • Day 8-10: • Create your visual presentation: • Create a poster, slideshow, website, or any other visual presentation that shows the furniture and overall theme you selected for your room! Working Conditions: • If you have a question, ask another student working on the project if Miss Fox is busy. If another student doesn’t know the answer, work on another piece of your project. Be patient; I will get to you as soon as I can! • Work on your project the whole math period. • Keep track of all your project materials and learning contract.
