Table of Contents Module 1: Overview of U.S. Health Care and
Benchmark Developments  Module 1 Overview
Welcome to Module 1! This module provides an overview of the U.S. health care industry and the major
legislative, political, economic, organizational, and professional influences that have transformed
health care.

Module 1 provided a general overview of the U.S. health care industry, its policy makers, it values and
priorities, and its various responses to health care diseases and problems. A template for
understanding the natural histories of diseases and the levels of medical intervention was illustrated.
Major influences in the continuing growth and change of the US health services system were presented
as a foundation for further exploration. The conflicts of interest and ethical dilemmas resulting from
medicine’s technologic advances and the advent of managed care were also introduced.

This module also described the major developments in health care in the US and the important
legislative, political, economic, organizational, and professional influences that have transformed
health care from a relatively simple process to a huge, complex, corporation-dominated industry. The
effects of medical education, scientific advances, rising costs, changing population demographics, and
American values regarding health care were analyzed.

Our lives are so busy these days with work, family, and other social commitments. Adding in school can
be cause a lot of stress. In order to help minimize the stress, it is important to carve out time each
week dedicated to studying and working on your assignments. Take a look at the tips regarding time
management in the Writing Center. Complete the Weekly Planner in order to understand your
schedules. Make sure you include time for your studies.

Where do you turn when you have a question? Fellow students may have the same questions or
possibly answers. Next, your professor can provide help in understanding an assignment or the
expected outcomes of the assignment. Your advisors, the dean, and others can help with questions
about your college experience. Knowing where to look for assistance empowers your success.

Module 1 Discussion
Here you will find this module's required discussion question, instructions, and rubric.

Discussion Question:
The practice of medicine, long valued for individual entrepreneurship and physician control, has
undergone dramatic change. Physicians now face vexing oversight of case and utilization management
and loss of control over the allocation of health care dollars. Managed care organizations control
health costs by arbitrarily refusing reimbursement for certain medical procedures and reducing
payments for others. Since medicine is now a less attractive career option, will fewer high performing
individuals choose to become physicians? What are the implications for the quality of care?

Module 1 Assignment Due Nov 2nd

Here you will find this module's required discussion question, instructions, and rubric.

Assignment Description:
Complete ALL of the bullet points below:

• Health care planners could be more effective and efficient if they used the concept of the natural
history of disease and the levels of prevention to design services that intervene at the weakest link in
the chain of progression of specific diseases. Instead, most focus on high-technology solutions to
preventable problems. Assess the characteristics of the medical care culture that encourage the latter
approach.
• Hospitals and other health care institutions, whether voluntary or for-profit, need to be financially
solvent to survive growing market pressures. Describe how this "bottom line" focus has changed the
nature of the US health care system.
• The insurance industry plays a huge role in the American health care system and absorbs a significant
portion of the health care dollar. A single payer system, whether it is a private company or the US
government, would eliminate the complex insurance paperwork burden and free substantial funds that
could be diverted to support care for the under-served. Why do you believe that so much resistance to a
concept used in every other developed country has continued in the U.S.?
• Include the time management Weekly Planner  to show when you will make room for your school work.
Please submit one APA formatted paper between 1000 - 1500 words, not including the title and
reference page. The assignment should have a minimum of two scholarly sources, in addition to the
textbook.

Module 1 overview
This module provided an overview of nursing science and how nursing science relates to typical
nursing practice roles, nursing education, and nursing research. The organizing conceptual framework
for this course, the Foundation of Knowledge model, was introduced. After establishing this critical
groundwork, information systems were introduced, including the development, use, and management
of an organization’s IT infrastructure. A primary role of the nurse administrator is quality decision-
making and problem-solving skills, which are vital to the development of effective, valuable information
system. This module also provides in-depth coverage of computer science, including innovations in
computer hardware, software and architecture. These elements offer vital and valuable tools for both
nurses and clients to engage in on-screen and online activities that provide rich access to data and
information. Cognitive science, the interdisciplinary field that studies the mind, intelligence, and
behavior from an information processing perspective was also included as a fundamental aspect of
this module.

 Module Goals

 Define nursing science and its relationship to various nursing roles and nursing informatics.
 Analyze the Foundation of Knowledge model as the organizing conceptual framework for the
book.
 Assess the relationship between knowledge acquisition knowledge processing knowledge
generation, knowledge dissemination, and wisdom.
 Reflect on the progression from data to information to knowledge.
 Explore data acquisition or input and processing or retrieval, analysis, and synthesis of data.
 Analyze how computer systems function as tools for managing information and generating
knowledge.

Discussion Question
Here you will find this module's required discussion question, instructions, and rubric.

Discussion Question:
Information systems support and facilitate the functioning of people to enhance and evolve nursing
practice by generating knowledge. This knowledge represents five rights: the right information,
accessible by the right people in the right settings, applied the right way at the right time. It is also the
struggle to integrate new knowledge and old knowledge to enhance wisdom. If clinicians are inundated
with data without the ability to process it, this yields too little wisdom. That is why it is crucial that
clinicians have viable information systems at their fingertips to facilitate the acquisition, sharing and
utilization of knowledge while maturing wisdom; it is a process of empowerment. If you could only
meet FOUR of the Rights, which one would you omit, and why? Also, provide your rationale for each
Right you chose to meet.
