The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been declared by the World Health Organization
as an international public health emergency. Owing to its high infectivity, countries all over the
world implemented the nationwide lockdowns with the hope of flattening the epidemic curve.
Due to this situation, face to face classes were cancelled and schools have decided to adopt the
online learning method to continue the students’ education. With everything that is happening,
students became more prone to experiencing stress because of having to cope up with the new
normal of living as well as with the new normal of learning.

Stress is the reaction of one’s body and mind to something that causes a change in the balance.
The level of difficulties inherent in the coursework and exams may present different stress
levels to the students. (Rafidah, Azizah, Norzaidi, Chong, Salwani & Noraini, 2009, 37). Stress is
a common aspect of many different emotions like anxiety, frustration, anger, worry, fear,
sadness, and despair. Some reasons for stress during adolescence are because of disturbed
family dynamics, peer pressure, inability to cope with studies, drug abuse and lack of
competence. (Ghatol, 2017, 38). Stress is also high correlated social and financial stress. (Pariat,
Rynjah, Joplin & Kharjana, n.d., 40). It is a result of a wide range of issues including the test and
exam burden, a demanding course, a different educational system, and thinking about future
plans upon graduation. (Ramli, Alavi, Mehrihnezhad, & Ahmadi, 2018, 1). Stress can really
change an individual feelings or emotions. (MyersDG, 2005, 86). Shastri (2016) explained that
some individuals are more sensitive or prone to some stressor than others, stress is caused by
environmental and internal demands that need to be adjusted continuously. Stresses van cause
an individual to become stressful, feel distress and emotional while on the other hand, stresses
gives motivation and evoke an individual to be more upholding and persistence in the study in
order to reach the optimum target and achieve further success. (Singh, Sharma, & Sharma,
2011, 152 – 153).

As we are all in the middle of the pandemic, and a lot of changes are happening around us ,
these widespread changes represent considerable sources of stress in the population and will
have deleterious effects on mental and physical health going forward. As nations begin to
emerge from ‘lockdown’, the collateral damage to human health caused by these restrictions
has taken centre stage, and mental health issues, particularly stress‐related conditions and
outcomes, are prominent among them. The purpose of this study is to determine on how
Senior High School students, particularly the Grade 11 students of St. Mary’s Academy of
Guagua manage the different stress that is being brought by the pandemic.
