Factors Affecting the Mental Health of G11 Humss Student Amidst of

Pandemic.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION OF STORY

The COVID-19 pandemic has instituted a sudden and major change in people’s lives
worldwide. From everyone’s normal day-to-day affected by a contagious virus, it created shock when
quarantine and lockdown kept people in their homes. Due to COVID-19, people worldwide had to adjust
to the new normal and many aspects of people’s lives were affected by the global pandemic. For
students, it could impact their well-being. Mental health may be influenced by biological factors such as
genetics, social factors such as psychological trauma, neglect, and low self-esteem, as well as
environmental factors such as physical head injury, lack of nutrition, and toxin exposure may lead to
mental illness. Mental Health and Coping Strategies may have their separate influences, but both may
interchangeably affect one another; a student could develop anxiety or depression on the course of the
Health Crisis and later on will adapt to the situation and introduce strategies to cope up with the existing
mental health conditions.

There are already numerous pre-existing influences that have a play in the mental Health
and coping strategies of students. The COVID-19 pandemic is bound to greatly affect the well-being and
the coping strategies of students, especially when the circumstances are very different in a global
pandemic. It is undeniable there is a possibility that the pandemic may negatively affect either one. This
study explores the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health and the coping strategies of students and
whether or not there is a relationship between them.

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this research study was to explore how the COVID-19 Pandemic impacts
the mental health and coping strategies of the grade 11 students of Morong National Senior High
School. One of the objectives of this research is to know how the grade 11 senior high school Humss
student cope with the COVID-19 pandemic situation. During this time of the pandemic, a lot of students
struggle with the situation which can result in depression. This study was able to find how the students
cope with the challenges that they face during this time of Pandemic and to know what their strategies
are to cope with the situation. The research has used a quantitative design that follows descriptive
research, which will involve giving some checklist via google form that will be given by the researchers
and will be answered by the respondents. The researchers identified how many students are affected by
the COVID-19 pandemic through changes in behavior, attitude, and well-being, as well as the factors
that affect them in the new normal. This study conducted by the researchers is for the grade 11 students
with ages ranging from 17-19 years old from Morong National Senior Highschool.
RESEARCH QUESTION

1.What is the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the mental health and coping strategies of Grade 11
Moronians?

2. What are the coping strategies of the Grade 11 students during the pandemic?

SCOPE AND DELIMINATION

This study solely focuses on the psychological impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic situation
on the mental health of Grade 11 Senior high school students and explores the coping strategies that
they have adapted. The collection of data for this study was only conducted to the population of the
Grade 11 Senior high school students of Morong National Senior Highschool, Academic Year 2021-022.
The students who were not part of the Grade 11 Senior high school population of the A.Y. 2021-2022 are
not within the cover of this research study as this study was only limited to the Grade 11 students of
Batch 2021-2022. The researchers did not cover other problems of the students that are not related to
the psychological impacts on the mental health of students and their coping strategies during the Covid-
19 pandemic situation.

The study was conducted through the utilization of survey questionnaires to the
Students as a part of the data collection necessary for the study. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic
situation, the collection of data was only done in an online setting through the utilization of Google
Forms. Through this approach, the researchers were able to find and understand the psychological
impact of the Covid-19 pandemic situation on the mental health of Grade 11 Senior high school students
and the coping strategies they have adapted.

The study was conducted with a limited time frame due to deadlines. The data that was
gathered was limited only until the first term because the researchers did not have practical research
subjects in the second and third term. Additionally, this research was also limited only to the Grade 11
students of Morong National Senior High School. The use of google form was the only choice of data
gathering because the researchers cannot go near the respondents because of social distancing and
Covid-19 pandemic.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are frequently used throughout this study, in this section, they are
defined operationally based on the research’s context.
Coping Strategies. As stated in MacArthur SES & Health Network l Research (n.d.),Coping strategies are
the behavioral and psychological methods that people use to learn, withstand, eliminate, or reduce
stressful situations.

Pandemic. According to Merriam-Webster (n.d), it is an outbreak of a disease that occursOver a wide


geographical area and typically impacts a significant proportion of a population. In the study, this
pertains to the “new normal” that the population faces, and it is the COVID-19 outbreak that affected
many worldwide.

Psychology. In this study, it is defined as a branch in the social sciences concerned with behavior and the
mind. Psychological Impact. It is the influence and effect of something, such as the COVID-19 outbreak,
to one’s mental health, behavior, and emotional well-being.

Mental health. The study will refer to mental health as the psychological and emotional well-being of a
person. Depression. A mental health disorder that negatively affects a person’s mood. The study will
identify how it causes feelings of sadness and loss of interest and motivation in an individual’s daily life
concerning a person’s experience in the new normal.

Anxiety. It is a mental disorder that involves the feeling of excessive worry and fear.

Stigma. In this study, it is defined as the negative social view or association towards a quality,
circumstance, person, or characteristic. Individuals are often discriminated against, shamed, or
disapproved due to social stigma.

Mental health professionals. In this study, this will pertain to the professionals in Handling mental
health, behavior, and attitudes. This would include psychologists, psychiatrists, guidance counselors, and
other professions that are needed to provide and help individuals from the negative effects of mental
health.

SUMMARY

The current Covid-19 situation has affected many students, the study will focus on its
Impact on the students’ mental health and their coping strategies during a time of the pandemic. The
study aims to understand how the Grade 11 SHS students from Morong Nationa Senior High School are
affected due to the possible psychological effects that can occur to many students during this time of
challenge, the results from the data gathered will be useful to determine what can help the students to
prevent the occurrence of the negative effects of the current global situation on their mental health
state during this time. The analyzed data collected from the study will be helpful to the following:
Students, Teachers, Parents, and Mental Health Experts as it will serve as a springboard to help students
to be guided to overcome and prevent the psychological effects of Covid-19 that can affect their well-
being.
