Introduction

Mental illness, sometimes known as "mental health disorders," refers to a broad spectrum

of mental health diseases that influence your emotions, thinking, and behaviour. Depression,

anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and addictive behaviours’ are examples of

mental illness. It can be concluded that our mental health has a significant impact on our

decision-making process and life path.

Many research have shown that the pandemic has had negative consequences on mental

health. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, common mental health disorders such as sadness,

anxiety, and stress may become more common. Anxiety, stress, and depression are all

symptoms of depression. In a recent study, students' views were also discovered.Concentration

problems, sleep disturbances, and decreased social contacts were all investigated in this study

due to physical distance and concerns about academic performance. IN light of the COVID-19's

challenging circumstances it expected a significant impact of Distance Education and academic

changes on students, including depressive symptoms, concentration difficulties, and memory in

the aftermath of the outbreak. As a result, we deemed these variables to be important.Low

performance during DE could be predicted by a number of factors. During the COVID-19

shutdown, regression analyses were used to uncover potential determinants of poor academic

achievement. During DE, students' self-evaluations of their overall academic performance were

coded. high (students reporting no problems, only occasional difficulties, or some difficulties)

and low (students reporting no problems, only occasional difficulties, or some difficulties. The

global spread of the Covid-19 virus has shaken the global population's mental health. In light of
lOMoARcPSD|24699948

the pandemic, the student population suffers additional loads and problems of the abrupt shift

in learning modality and educational delivery to cope with the "new normal."

Due to the implementation of distance learning in the new educational system of the

Philippines in order for students to continue their studies and not sacrifice another year of

learning, mental health is now the number one main issue in this time of pandemic. As a result,

distance learning puts students' mental health at risk.

Distance learning is a feasible alternative for school activities that do not necessitate face-

deface connection. Distance learning, on the other hand, might have a negative impact on

students' mental health. The goal of this study is to see how distant learning affects the mental

health of senior high school students of Justicia Morales Young national high school.Students

with mental health issues are less likely to complete and/or pass a course or module, are more

likely to drop out of university, and get lower grades.Distance learning can be difficult,

especially when students are under academic pressure. Distance learning has a detrimental

effect on the relationship between anxiety and student achievement, according to the

literature .Face-to-face learning and distance learning have unique differences. The researcher

conduct this study about the effect of distance learning on mental health of Senior high

school. This will be of great help to students who, as of this year, are still struggling to deal with

distance learning due to the pandemic; this study aims to give them great ideas on how to

overcome it. The researchers will know its other effects In addition, will learn about its

potential effects on man and his health. Like depression, anxiety, and stress are all common

mental health issues that may become more common as a result of the distance learning cause

by COVID-19 pandemic

The goal of this study is to come up with and implement a possible solution to this problem,

because we all know that the effect of distance learning on mental health is a major concern

among students and parents in this modern educational system. The researcher used several

ways to collect data and information that will fully support this study and provide a suggestion

on how to fix this problem that will benefit every individual, group of individuals, and family,

particularly the community.

The same goal of this study is to determine the effect of distance learning on mental health

of the senior high students in Justicia Morales Young national high school why its continue

increasing in the new modes of learning .This study aims to examine the effect of distance

learning on students mental health on how its affecting their studies. Specially, it aims to: a)

Identify the factors that affect students' mental health during a distance learning: b) to

evaluate the behaviour of the students in the effect of distance learning on the mental health

on how it affect their studies or learning styleAsynchronous mode is used in traditional face-to-

face classroom teaching. Face-to-face benefits include a quick pace and the ability to

communicate verbally on the spur of the moment. Courses can be synchronous in an online

environment by using collaboration software that allows students and a lecturer to interact in a

virtual location, simulating the traditional classroom setting. Although traditional learning has a

higher impact on students' learning and mental health, in this pandemic, online learning is best

option. This is due to the fact that online learning does not endanger the pupils' physical well-
lOMoARcPSD|24699948

being. Students are safe and comfortable in their own houses. Although if online learning

serves as a temporary solution in education, it does not negate the fact that that kids may still

suffer mental illness develop during and after e-learning courses, economic intricacy, lack of

feedback and encouragement, isolation, lack of motivation, discontent with rules or

regulations, and changes in career aspirations are all factors that contribute to poor

performance and a high dropout rate in distant education. Self-learning is an important part of

distance learning, according to Valery and Lord (2000).Students must be able to recognize the

need of committing sufficient time to their studies. Learners may plan and organize their study

situations with enough time and self-discipline, and their study successes will be successful

(Valery & Lord, 2000). Nonetheless, there is a clear link between distant learning and a learner's

mental health. This encompasses the student's psychological, emotional, and social aspects.

Geolocation investigates the psychological aspects of information technology. She discussed

the negative consequences of using information technology that psychologists and therapists

must now deal with. Techno-stress, computer phobia, computer game addiction, Internet

addiction, hacking, narrowing of interests, autism, identity transformation, and lack of growth

are some of them.

Students' capacity to absorb information is limited in general, and a mixture of learning

modalities is likely to cause cognitive weariness, compromising their ability to learn new

knowledge adequately . According to Unger. mental health issues continue to be the most

significant impediment to academic success. It has the potential to impede students'

motivation, attention, and social interaction (Nasir, 2020), all of which are essential for pupils to

succeed in school. Teachers must have constructive verbal motivation to increase students'
lOMoARcPSD|24699948

academic progress; teachers must demonstrate a good mind-set that helps motivate students,

and behaviours that are vital to cognitive engagement in learning environments, according to.

It would be able to motivate kids to achieve their goals. Physical activities are related to mental

health, increased physical activities may help children reduce stress, depression and anxiety

effects. Depression can affect almost every aspect of your life including relationship, health,

career and education and may lead to very unhealthy lifestyle such as taking alcohol and taking

illegal drugs. The researchers will explain distance learning can effect the mental health of

students and also, students and parents can learn tips on how to cope with the challenges of

distance learning.

Definition of terms

Mental illness- are health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking or behavior (or a

combination of these). Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems.

Mental health- includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we

think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make

choices.

Distance learning- a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are

conducted by correspondence or over the internet, without the student's needing to attend a

school or college. Also called distance education. ( Oxford language)

Anxiety- a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or

something with an uncertain outcome. (Oxford language)

Educational system - is a structure made up of various components that allow the population

to be educated.

Asynchronous mode- allows students to design their own learning schedules. Students can

spend more time on challenging areas and work toward mastery. Individual pacing also helps

address different learning styles.

Synchronous- Students can ask questions in real-time. Students feel a greater sense of

community and connection to their peers when they all learn together. Students become more

engaged in their learning.

According to (Jegede, Alaiyemola, & Okebukola, 1990) High school students are adolescent who

are having difficulties in their studies. They feel pressured and anxious whenever they do things

in their lives, such as making decisions. With a lack of social and physical connection, as well as

all the additional stressors caused by the pandemic, it is no surprise that the COVID-19

pandemic is having an impact on students' mental health. Distance learning can be difficult,

produces greater results in terms of student learning, In this time of epidemic, online learning

will be the finest option for learning and mental health. This is due to the fact that online

learning would risk the health of the pupils, especially if a virus is present outside the

classroom. They are safe and comfortable in their own houses. Nonetheless, even if online

learning can be a useful tool,

Although there is a transitory setting in education, this does not negate the reality that pupils

are life-altering and devastating.
