depression.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

This chapter mainly discusses the rationale and background of the problem. It

includes the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study,

scope and delimitation, and the definition of terms used in the study.

Background of the Study

Teen depression is a major mental health issue that affects every one in five teens. It

controls how a teen behaves overall, and causes consistent sorrow in the teen. It is not an

issue that you can just “get-over”, it takes treatment and outside help to truly fight this mental

illness. Not only does it emotionally and physically exhaust the person it affects, but it also

greatly impacts the lives of an everyday teenager.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. Many of us are facing

challenges that can be stressful, overwhelming, and cause strong emotions in adults and

children. Public health actions, such as social distancing, are necessary to reduce the spread

of COVID-19, but they can make us feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and

anxiety. Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will make you, the people you care

about, and those around you become more resilient.

Most of these characteristics are echoed in the depressive symptomato-logy research

among university students in general, such as gender (Mikolajczyk et al, 2008; WFMH,

2012), living arrangements (Eisenberg et al, 2007), and social connectedness (Lee et al,

2013). Additionally, general research on student depression indicates the significant

associations of being older and senior students (Bostanci et al, 2005), Catholics and/or Jews

(McCullough and Larson, 1999; Phillips and Henderson, 2006), smokers (Yazici, 2008), and

alcohol drinkers (Zawawi and Hamaideh, 2009). Depression among these students can be

averted if those exhibiting higher levels of depressive symptoms are given prompt and

effective interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, the study aimed to determine and understand the management mechanisms

of children in school-going of on the school in experiencing depression.

Specifically, the study aimed to determine:

1. The different factors that affect the school-going children

specifically in experiencing depression.

2. The difficulties that the school-going children are experiencing upon

studying facing the hardship in depression.

3. The management mechanisms of the school-going children as they experience

depression.
Significance of the Study

Covid-19 restricts social interaction. Because of this, studying the management

mechanisms of school going children has become a challenge in studying depression.. Thus,

the researchers of this study are hopeful that the results of this study will be beneficial to the

following sectors of the community:

Students. This study will help school-going children to be aware and knowledgeable of the

different management mechanisms to help them overcome their difficulties in experiencing

depression.

Teachers. The results of this study will serve as a guide for teachers in determining

and recognizing the challenges that the students experience in depression, to help them adjust,

and to provide alternative solutions or ways in making their learning experience more

efficient and easier.

Parents. This study will assist the parents of the students to identify the different

factors that affect their child’s in management mechanisms to depression and also to give the

parents ideas on how to guide their children properly as they overcome their difficulties.

School Administrations. The findings of this study will help school administrations

to discover and implement more effective ways in helping students in possible through in
finding the management mechanisms particularly in making the students’ more safe of any

depression

efficient and easier.

Department of Education. This study will be an instrument to address the different

challenges encountered by the students to the Department of Education. It will serve as a

basis for the department in providing a good quality education school going children and in

making their learning competencies achievable to the students and to far from any depression.

Department of Health. This study will be an instrument to address the different

challenges encountered by the students to the Department of Health. It will serve as a basis

for the department in providing more efficient way in coping depressions

Future Researchers. The results of the study will serve as a reference material and a

guide for future researchers who want to conduct further studies or studies related to the

current study.

Scope and Delimitations

This study focused mainly on the management mechanisms of the school-going

children in experiencing depression. Problems and difficulties of the students and the way

they deal with these were evaluated including their opinions and viewpoint towards this new

mode of learning. However, the study didn’t cover anxieties, and didn’t focus on the

performance and behavior of the students toward depression. The study

concentrated only on the gathered responses from the respondents.

The researchers provided a survey-questionnaire to each of the fiffifteen (15) both

Junior High and Senior High in Camalaniugan National High School. These were sent to the

respondents in a google form through their social media accounts.

This study was conducted in the second semester of the school year 2020-2021.
