EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The researchers will program Traquer, an electronic attendance tracking system with a

contactless temperature scanner and a disinfecting walk-through gate with the use of Near

Field Communication (NFC) card as students‟ identification card integrated with a systematic

attendance tracker.

The product will have 1 main feature and 2 additional features; RFID-based

attendance tracking system, contactless temperature scanners, and disinfecting walk-through

gate. The RFID-based attendance tracking system will use NFC cards to input the students‟

log-in and log-out time along with their names, section, name of adviser, Universal

Identification (UID), and body temperature. The contactless temperature scanner will work

when an NFC card is placed above an RFID reader. While the disinfecting walk-through gate

works independently with the utilization of HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor.

The system inputs data in software, specifically the Microsoft Excel, which stores the

students‟ information, connected through any gadgets, preferably a laptop. Moreover, the

teachers can easily access the file which contains students‟ attendance information.

With this innovation, the researchers are aiming to minimize the indirect physical

contact acquired from the manual attendance tracking method.

INTRODUCTION
RATIONALE/ SIGNIFICANCE
As the covid-19 warning level is slowly decreasing in the Philippines, the educational

institutions start to re-operate. Fortunately, the Department of Education (2021) has given the

approval for progressive expansion of limited in-person classes for both public and private

schools.
For the safety of each individual, safety health measures were stringently

administered. Social distancing and disinfection are being enforced as effective ways of

slowing down the spread of the virus (Li et al., 2020). With these safety measures, limited in-

person classes ensued minimizing the risk of spreading the virus.

However, the class advisers and subject teachers shall ensure that the attendance of

learners is closely monitored (DepEd, 2022). In many schools in the Philippines, the students

are required to fill out the name and section on an attendance sheet manually, which is a pen-

to-paper method, recording the data on the same piece of paper as the preceding student. As a

result, students are now more vulnerable to the infection as unknowingly practice the indirect

physical contact.

In line with this problem, the researchers came up with the idea of developing

Traquer, an innovative product that can help minimize physical contact of the students in

Cantilan National High School, while monitoring the attendance with the use of Radio-

Frequency Identification (RFID). It is also equipped with a contactless temperature scanner

for temperature checking, and a disinfecting walk-through gate to sanitize student‟s body

before entering the classroom. Traquer, is a great fit for this dilemma which not only provides

the attendance of the student and for the prevention of physical contact, but it also helps track

and trace the information for future contact tracing purposes.

1. Assess whether this equipment is capable of ensuring safety

2. Identify if it may be used as an alternative to manual tracking

3. Utilize the product with regards to contact tracing

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents selected literature and studies which served as the background

information of the basic concept which this study intended to investigate. Likewise in this

section are selected readings and finding the different studies locally and abroad, to provide

workable background of study.

Local Studies

Considering the present health crisis, Department of Health (2020) advised the public

to practice the infection prevention and control measures, such as physical distancing,

physical contactless, and proper hygiene. Most schools in level across the Philippines employ

the manual such as the pen-to-paper method which require students to submit it with their

name, signature, and section. However, relaying the attendance sheets in school is an indirect

method of transferring the coronavirus.

Another convenient method, according to Balba, Rebong, & Santos (2021) especially

in large classes, is a seating plan to easily monitor the present, check free seats and assign

them to the students. After collecting the data, any of these methods would still require the

information collected to be encoded in order to generate for the daily attendance report for

the learners (DepEd, 2014)

Thus, with today's fast technical developments, traditional methods of checking and

monitoring data are becoming more and more obsolete. Balba, Rebong, and Santos (2021)

said that the most important consideration in order to replace the manual or traditional

operations is improving and utilizing the productivity of the technology – in order for the

public to also minimize the exposures of potentially contaminated surfaces.

The Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) is (1) a technology that is widely used

nowadays to build a smart system that can be used for effective identification, monitoring,

and security of data (Morallo, 2015) and (2) an innovative solution against infectious disease.

Even before the pandemic started, the RFID system has been helpful for various medical

institutions. For instance, it has been used in managing scrub inventories. RFID trackers are

attached to scrubs to prevent hoarding and ensure that workers are not rummaging through

the supply to locate their correct sizes (“Internet of Things Philippines Inc., n.d).

Educational institutions may also enhance contactless transactions under the

pandemic as it is already an effective tool used in some schools in the Philippines prior to the

crisis. In fact, Morallo (2015) stated that RFID technology is the medium used by students„ in

LPU-Laguna as identification card. Consequently, attendance tracking is an important factor

of an effective organizational management.

Foreign Studies

The rise of non-physical contact services and systems has been on since Covid-19

pandemic has started. And for a brief period of time, businesses and services alike started to

adapt to these changes as to not continue or even just try to neutralize the spread of the viral

disease. Adaptations like these range from a variety of unorthodox services, such as of

minimal contact to no contact at all. One of the examples of these rapid conversions to post-

pandemic technologies includes the use of automated machines solely created for the purpose

of reducing physical contact.

Thermo-graphic scanning is a proven technology based on infrared imaging used in a

wide range of applications like monitoring, diagnosis of industrial machines and products and

diagnosis of health (Bagavathiappan et al., 2013; Usamentiaga et al., 2014). Accordingly,

thermal imaging devices are used for fever detection since 1985 (Hughes et al., 1985). Since

then, the increase of convenience in accessible technology to the public has soared.

Within the rapid increase of advancement in the technological aspects of thermal

imaging, so come other changes in other types of technology. Robotics is considered as one

of the most groundbreaking formulations of technology in human history, and the

implementation of such technologies is considered as such a convenience to our system in

this society. Take disinfecting, for example. A smart sterilization robot system should be able

to carry out various functions, not limited to remote movement and disinfection. Besides

achieving effective disinfection, such a system should use sensor data to navigate the

surrounding environment and ensure safety according to established disinfection strategies.

Traditional disinfection based on human labor is restricted to the available time and attention

of operators. Compared to manual disinfection, robot disinfection can be performed around

the clock, even at peak times; prevent pathogenic environments or disinfectants from harming

humans; and adapt to a variety of working conditions (Yu-Lin et al., 2021).

Despite the fact that these machineries were used to act in accordance with the safety

health protocols, the spread of the virus was not stopped. Hence, utilizing these equipments

helped in slowing down the virus and gave us enough time to create a more resounding fail-

safe way to counter it, like vaccinations. However, with our current practices, a lot of people

still tested positive for Covid-19 virus and it was hard to keep up with the statistics.

Currently, the scale of COVID‐19 infections has outstripped governments‟ capacities to

conduct manual contact tracing (Ferretti 2020). According to Kretzschmar (2020), existing

contact tracing practices are resource‐intensive, slow and often subject to recall bias. With

the results, another way to speed up the process is by going digital. Digital solutions are

designed to improve data management, and analyse the contact list and contextual

information for the contact tracers so that the contacts can be quickly notified about their
potential exposure to a newly diagnosed case. Rapidly identifying close contacts allows for

more rapid isolation. An additional benefit of digital solutions is that they may also

incorporate automatic data entry technology, which can potentially identify unknown or

anonymous contacts that the case would normally not be able to recall (Anglemyer et al.,

2020).

METHODOLOGY
This section presents the research design, research locale, and experimental procedure of the

study.

Research Design

Experimental Research Design

This research will utilize the experimental research design as appropriate to the study

in collecting necessary information and proving the use of the Traquer innovation in

minimizing the physical contact between the students in Cantilan National High School. It is

helpful in experimenting how the Traquer works as a 3 in 1 product - an alternative to the

manual attendance tracker, temperature scanner, and a walk-through gate that disinfects the

learners and teachers as the Covid-19 crisis continuously disrupt our education system.

Experimental research is a scientific approach to research, where one or more

independent variables are manipulated and applied to one or more dependent variables to

measure its effects on the latter. The effects of the independent variables on the dependent

variables are usually observed and recorded over some time, to aid researchers in drawing a

reasonable conclusion regarding the relationship between these 2 variable types. Generally,

the purpose is to establish the effect that a factor or independent variable has on a dependent

variable.
Rapid Application Development

Prior on experimenting with the product to the sample population, the researchers will

analyse the functionality of the prototype‟s system. The researchers will use the Rapid

Application Development (RAD) as the method of developing the system. The RAD method

is a system process model that focuses primarily on the system development portion thereby

utilizing the used of prototypes (Morallo, 2015). Furthermore, prototyping is used for trial

and error allowing certain changes and application to the system.

In effect, this 4-step methodology process includes all the necessary activities for

designing, developing, and presenting the Traquer system in order to provide the necessary

improvements for the product.

Research Locale

The prototype will be constructed and pre-tested at the student researchers‟ house.

The final testing of Traquer will be at the Grade 12 STEM classroom specifically on its

entrance door.

Experimental Procedure

Programming for RFID, Temperature Scanner, and Alcohol pump

The coding for the Radio-frequency Identification (RFID), temperature scanner, and

alcohol pump are to be programmed in Arduino IDE. Through the help of various search

engines, the researchers will be able to follow different guides in constructing the codes.

During the process of coding, we will assemble different materials to produce the product.

We will utilize bread board, Arduino uno, jumper wires, RFID tag and RFID reader,

MFRC522 Module, NFC card, MLX9614 Contactless Temperature Sensor, Ultrasonic

Sensor, LCD I2C, HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor, Channel Relay, 12v Power Supply,

Buzzer, LED Lights, Micro Diaphragm High Pressure Self Priming Water Pump, hose,

nozzles, disinfecting spray.

Construction of the Disinfecting Walk-Through Gate

The researcher will prepare a couple of used 2”x2” wood, finishing nails, sandpaper,

white paint for the first coating and black paint for the second coating, and paint brushes. The

dimension of our disinfecting walk-through gate is the same as the standard size of a door.

Upon finishing the stand, we will install the water hose along with the nozzles and pipe

connectors.

Making of the Standbox

The standbox will be made with cut out plywood, finishing nails, door handle, hinge,

illustration board, paint and paint brush. It is designed with one door, all for the disinfectant

and for the system parts. Put holes in the illustration board to fill in with the RFID scanner,

temperature sensor, LCDI2C, Led Light, Ultrasonic sensor, and Buzzer.

Testing of Traquer

The RAD process focuses primarily on the Traquer‟s system development through

utilizing the use of a prototype allowing revisions such that trial and error to achieve a quality
product. Countless changes will be made on the wirings and accurate coding is necessarily to

be programmed. Through the usage of RAD, the functions of Traquer will be workable.

After which, the Traquer is well-equipped for the final experiment tested at the

entrance door of Grade 12 STEM classroom.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS AND POTENTIAL IMPACTS

Rapid Application Development Process

A. The Arduino Uno, RFID, and Temperature Scanner

Figure 3. The flow of the RFID, Temperature Scanner, and Ultrasonic Sensor, Ultrasonic

Sensor, LCD, LED Lights, Breadboard and Buzzer

The LCD will flash the opening message containing the phrase “Hello, Grade 12-

STEM!” from the beginning of the system. The system flow for attendance tracking starts

when the ultrasonic sensor detects object from 6 cm and below.

The RFID module is then triggered to scan for any NFC card that is present in the

range of area. If there‟s no NFC card present, the system will continue to loop from the start

and can only proceed to the next command when NFC is present. After scanning the UID of

the NFC card, the system will match the acquired UID for the assigned data set by the

system. If the NFC card is not registered, the buzzer will be triggered, the light will display

red, and LCD will show “Not Registered” for 1s, indicating that the NFC is not registered

yet. Else, if the NFC card is part of the registered ones, data from the assigned card will be

stored to the Arduino Uno to be used later in inputting data and it will now proceed in

scanning the temperature using the contactless temperature scanner. If the temperature

reached above 38 Celsius or below 35 Celsius, the buzzer will be triggered, light will lit red,

and LCD will show the temperature for 1.5s indicating that the student‟s temperature reached

and beyond the limit of a normal body temperature. “Retry Scanning” will be displayed in the

LCD so that the student could retry the whole process and double check the temperature. If

not, there will be no access in entering the classroom and/or depending on the teacher‟s

decision.

No data will be stored from the NFC card to the Arduino Uno if the temperature

reached beyond and below the range of a normal temperature. If the body temperature is

normal, the buzzer will be triggered for .03s, same goes for the light where it will light the

green and the LCD will show the welcoming message. All of these will be executed for 1

second prior to scanning.

After the successful scanning, the stored data from the Arduino Uno will be transferred to the

Microsoft Excel Software where the researchers will be utilizing the use of the ad-on tool
“PLX-DAQ”. The USB port will serve as the connection for the laptop and Arduino Uno so it

must always be present if the students want the connection between them.

Figure 4. The flow of Arduino Uno and Microsoft Excel

The PIR Motion Sensor will be triggered for approximately 3s when any motion is

detected. PIR Motion Sensor will send electric signal to the Arduino Uno in order for the

relay to function as the connector for the power supply and water pump.

According to Technopedia (n.d) Arduino refers to an open-source electronics platform

or board and the software used to program it. An Arduino board can be purchased pre-

assembled or, because the hardware design is open source, built by hand. Either way, users

can adapt the boards to their needs, as well as update and distribute their own versions.

1. Connection of Arduino Uno and RFID

Figure 5. The flow of Arduino and RFID – RFID Transmitter and RFID Receiver with

regards to sending and receiving data

The NFC Card serves as a transmitter in transmitting information to the RFID

Module. The transmitted information is then converted to series of number in which we

obtained the UID.

2. Connection of Arduino Uno and Ultrasonic Sensor

Figure 6. The flow of Arduino Uno and Ultrasonic Sensor with regards to distance

The Ultrasonic Sensor uses sound waves to detect any object from the area. When an

object is brought near the ultrasonic sensor, the waves created from the trigger pin would be

reflected to the echo pin in which this could detect the distance of the object near the sensor.

3. Connection of Arduino Uno and Temperature Scanner

Figure 7. The flow of Arduino Uno and Temperature Scanner with regards to temperature

scanning

The contactless temperature scanner uses infrared radiation in collecting signal from

object near it and converting it into electric signals. When an object is brought near the

module, it will scan the temperature of the object and storing it in the Arduino Uno.

4. Connection of Arduino Uno, Ultrasonic Sensor, and Temperature Scanner

The Temperature scanner scans almost everything around it. In order to limit this, the

researchers paired the ultrasonic sensor with the temperature scanner so that when it reach

specific distance assigned for the ultrasonic sensor, the temperature will be scanning only

once and the data obtained will be sent to the Arduino Uno.

B. Power Supply, Water Pump, and Disinfecting spray

If the PIR Motion sensor is triggered, the channel relay allows the current from the

power supply to pass to the water pump making it function in return. The power supply is

connected to a wire and will be directly charged from an outlet. The pump powers with 12V

so the researchers adjusted the power supply to 12V in order for it to send enough current to

the water pump. The single relay can handle this 12V so there is no need to have more relay

connected.

C. The expected structure of the prototype

1. The standbox

Figure 8. The standbox that has all the system parts

2. The Disinfecting Walk-Through Gate

The researchers will prepare a couple of used 2”x2” wood, finishing nails, sandpaper,

white paint for the first coating and black paint for the second coating, and paint brushes. The

dimension of our disinfecting walk-through gate is the same as the standard size of a door.

Upon finishing the stand, we will install the water hose along with the nozzles and pipe. The

disinfecting gate is dependent to the standbox since it contains all the system parts.
Figure 9. The stand where the water hose along with nozzles and connectors are installed

The following are the expected functions of the product:

(1) Can use Traquer as a contactless attendance tracking system for students.

(2) Can minimize the indirect physical contact with the use of RFID as attendance tracking

system together with the disinfecting walk-through gate.

(3) Can efficiently manage and monitor the attendance and temperature of students through

Microsoft excel software.

(4) Can provide electronic files of attendance.

The researchers strongly believe that the outcome of this study will benefit the

following:

Students. It will benefit the students with their core implementation of surface cleanliness

and overall disinfecting, while being hassle and contact free.

Teachers. This study is equipped with an automated tracking device which allows them to

record students‟ attendance automatically.

Future Researchers. This study provides them ideas and further needed information on how

to minimize physical contact, disinfecting, temperature checking and convenient attendance

tracking by the usage of a multifunctional machine. This study can also benefit them with

how and what works within the machinery and how everything functions overall.
Cantilan National High School. The administrator and staff may take into consideration of

developing more Traquer for both automated attendance tracking and contact tracing

purposes.
