Development of Janus: Automated Social Distancing and Hand Hygiene

Implementation Device for Establishments and Public Spaces

G.C.L. Calub, J.A.O. Cruz, D.M. Figuracion, M.A.M. Velasquez, F.C.C. York

Abstract: Janus is a device that aids with the implementation of certain minimum health protocols, i.e. social
distancing and proper hand hygiene, specifically in establishments and certain public spaces. It does this by
automating the process of maintaining a certain capacity in the establishment, and allowing the use of hand sanitizer
without having to make contact with the pump. The device uses two modules to be able to carry out its functions,
and these are the Capacity Monitoring Module and the Automated Hand Sanitizer Module. The capacity monitoring
module utilizes Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensors, a Serial MP3 player and a speaker, and a 20 x 4 LCD screen,
so that it is able to maintain count, and be able to remind people to follow certain minimum health protocols and
notify people if the establishment is already at capacity. The automated hand sanitizer module contains a sensor that
will detect the presence of a hand, indicating that a person wishes to use the hand sanitizer, and instructs servo
motors to automatically pump the sanitizer for them, so that they do not have to make contact with the sanitizer
pump anymore. Janus has the ability to accurately and consistently carry out its functions, such as counting,
notifying, detecting, and sanitizing, in the proper conditions or the correct situations.

The device contains a total of two modules: the

capacity monitoring module and the automated hand

The capacity monitoring module is the device’s first

line of detection of human entry or exit from the
establishment. This module is responsible for
counting the current amount of people in the
establishment, and as well as changing that value as Figure 2. A Fritzing pin diagram of Janus, which
people enter and exit the establishment. It utilizes contains the capacity monitoring module and the
sensors to detect human movement through the automated hand sanitizer module
The sensors take in this information and process it
through the code. If a motion is detected in the
entrance sensor, the device will begin to check the
current amount of people inside of the establishment,
which is denoted by the variable humval. It then
compares it to the maximum number of people that
can be accommodated by the establishment, denoted
by the variable maxval. If humval is less than or equal
to maxval, then the device will add one to humval
using this simple formula in the codes:
