INTRODUCTION

IoT in Healthcare
IoT technology has a huge impact on human life
in all aspects like medicine, health, industry,
transportation, education, and agriculture from
the last decade.
What is Dementia? Monitoring
Dementia is considered to be a chronic disease, where the elderly suffers
from a deterioration in cognitive functions (i.e., the ability to process
thought) beyond what might be expected from normal younger people.

Monitoring Dementia patients using IoT Technology Remainders

Different IoT sensors are used in monitoring the patient.

Localization
Localization of Dementia Patients using IoT
Wandering behavior is often observed in older people suffering from
cognitive impairments like dementia. GPS Tracking and RFID tags are
used to locate Dementia patient.
Communication
LITERATURE SURVEY
 Khan et.al proposed and designed an effective healthcare monitoring system using IoT and RFID tags.

 Srinivas et.al proposed an intelligent medicine box model. The wireless sensors alert patients to the
medication at the right time and updates about the medicine through notices in an android application.

 Indoor localization is very beneficial these days to trigger the onset of elderly fall or elopement due to
dementia.

 Mobility and activity features have been calculated using specialized global positioning system (GPS) kits
and ankle-worn accelerometers.

 Smartphones and wearables have successfully been applied to measure activity among older adults under
free-living conditions, daily step count and distance covered among people with dementia, and life space
among people with Parkinson disease and mild-to-moderate Alzheimer disease.
OBJECTIVE

The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive description about the contribution of IoT in healthcare, specifically
dementia patients.

1. Home monitoring system

 behaviour of the patient,
 b) patterns or changes through different stages
 c) Measuring mobility and activity
 d) changes in health parameters
2. Remainder System
 Medication, hospital appointments, daily activity schedule, and other added reminders.
3. Tracking System
• Location of the patient when lost
4. Communicative Aid

Semantics

SEG 3.0 methodology provides benefits to integrate heterogeneous data collected from different smart devices and provide Semantic
interoperability in IoT domain.

Big Data
 A data storage model for emergency healthcare is proposed that uses the volume and variety of healthcare data.

 IaaS and SaaS are used to organize heterogeneous physiological data during an emergency which makes it accessible to relevant
healthcare providers
2. Monitoring System

Mobility Measurement

 3 types of data namely: location, step count, and recognized

activities.

 Calculation of Mobility Metrics: MCP, Action range,

Distance covered, Time spent out, Time spent moving
between locations, Number of places visited, Number of
trips

Activity Measurement

 Activity bouts are detected using data obtained from

Google’s activity recognition application programming
interface

 Each instance of an activity is recorded with a time stamp

and confidence level for its recognition.

 Step count data are used in a straightforward manner to

calculate total daily steps.
 Monitoring Health Parameters: Vitals, Heart rate, temperature, medication, Glucose
level, Oxygen level, ECG, Anxiety Level and more.

 Daily Routine Activities.

 Interaction with family members.

 Monitoring patient’s communication.

Pill Dispenser

3. Remainder System

 Medication box consists of sensors for collecting and reporting state of the
patient through its related software control which continuously checks
whether the medicine is taken on time or not.

 Pill Refilling and Dispensing Module :

 Supportive pill box management software and database helps in
refilling the medication box.
 When the Arduino sends the signal, the pill which needs to be
dispensed will fall in the tray.

 Intelligent Medication Remainder

 Name of the medicines, quantity and dosage of each medicine,
number of days each medicine to be consumed.
 Maximum three times the box will alert the patients, the number
alerts can also be increased since the system is dynamic.

MedMinder- Smart Medication

4. Location Tracking System

 Track remotely the movement of the elderly at the room level.

 The passive RFID tags are used to find the location of the Elderly.
Different tag position include (a) neck, (b) ankle, (c) wrist, (d)
shoulders.

 When the target enters in the radio range of a single antenna, its
location is assumed to be the same as the location of the antenna.
5. Communication System

 Memory Keeper and InspireD - to prompt reminiscence and social

engagement.

 Social robots were reported to facilitate communication between

PwD and their caregivers.

 Use of NLP to predict the next word in the dementia patients.

CHALLENGES

 Figuring out how to collect, store, process, and analyze the massive amounts of data that healthcare providers receive.

 Synchronizing electronic health records collected from IoT-based systems with manual records.

 Monitoring the daily routine of the patient.

 Processing and analyzing massive amounts of data received.

 Restriction on Computation

 Memory Limitations

 Security

 Cost

 Network Architecture

 Data protection
CONCLUSION

 Technology has started playing an important role in the healthcare sector.

 Smart systems can facilitate communication, daily assistance and safety assistance to the patient.

 Various methods for caring for dementia patients once the disease has been diagnosed.

 Make life safer and more comfortable as well as to make the process easier for the patient, caregivers and family
members
