CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

COVID-19 pandemic is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)

that stunned the world in early 2020.On March 11, 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO)
declared this disease to be a pandemic. It was first reported in Wuhan (China) on December 31, 2019
and by July 31, 2020, it had spread across 217+ countries and territories. In terms of health, the novel
coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2) has afflicted people of all
ages, with older people and patients with comorbidities experiencing the worst symptoms and death
rates.

According to a research done by Aristovnik, A., Keržič, D., Ravšelj, D. et.al. entitled: Impacts
of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Life of Higher Education Students: A Global Perspective (2020), “Most
countries affected by the pandemic were able to slow down the spread of the coronavirus with varying
degrees of success, including by imposing drastic measures like banning public events and gatherings,
workplace closures, stay-at-home restrictions, restrictions on domestic and international transport,
testing and contact tracing, and shutting educational institutions down. Physically closing educational
institutions (schools, universities) proved to be an efficient way of minimizing the spread of the virus, yet
it has led to many challenges for both students and teachers, but also their families, friends, employers,
and thus society and the global economy.” “As of 1 April 2020, the number of learners required to stay
at home due to the closure of their educational institution on all levels reached a peak of 1.598 billion
from 194 countries.”

One of the countries affected by this pandemic is Philippines and part of the 1.598 billion learners
required to stay at home due to closure of educational institutions is the Senior High School Students in
Morong National High School. Despite being young and not part in any of the groups at risk of
coronavirus infection, they still experience the effects of this pandemic that brought big changes in their
everyday lives and what is even more concerning is their prospect in their distant future.

The main goal of this study is to know if the pandemic really affects the academic performance of the
Senior High School Student in Morong National High School by discovering the effects of pandemic in
their learning performance through survey or interview. The results of this research also aim to help
teachers, parents, and students by providing information’s gathered in the research.

Hypothesis of the Study

There is no significant affect of Distance Learning Modality to the academic performance

Of the Senior High School Students in Morong NHS?

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to know if the Distance Learning Modality really affects the performance of the
Senior High School students in Morong National High School and sought to answer the following specific
question.
1. What are profile of the respondents in terms of strand/section?

2. How may the average grade of respondents be described?

3. How may the Distance Learning Modality be described?

4. Is there significant affect of Distance Learning Modality to the academic

performance of students?

5. Based from the result of the study, what recommendations may be given towards improved
academic performance of students using Distance Learning Modality?

Scope and Delimitation

The main goal of this research is to know if the pandemic really affects the academic
performance of SHS Students of MNHS, the factors that affect their academic performance, and if there
changes in terms of their grade before and now during this time of pandemic. The area of this research
is Morong National High School and the particular respondents are Grade 12 SHS students. The
application of the result of the study is limited to Morong NHS since the researcher solely gathered data
in this school.

Significance of the Study

This research is significant to the following:

Students. This research will evaluate the academic performance of Grade 12 SHS Students in Morong
National High School during this time of pandemic. Gathered data in this research will also help the
students improve their learning and academic performance.
