Social connection in Physical distance: Understanding the Social Lives of Students in the
Repeating Pandemic Situation.

RATIONALE
INFORMATION
As we all know, the Covid-19 outbreak has wreaked havoc on our lives. Due to the closure of
schools, the Department of Education has implemented distance learning to ensure that
students continue to receive an education while we are still battling with the pandemic.
Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones stated that online learning is only one option from the
menu of learning modalities. These modalities will be offered appropriately depending on the
situation of the learners’ households. In the Philippines, a new learning modality began
around October 2020 however, we recognize that it has a significant impact on each student's
social life. No long lines at the school gates, no excited students wearing colorful backpacks,
and no personal interaction together with their classmates. Distance learning is when
teachers and students are geographically remote from each other during their classes. This
means that courses are provided using a combination of modular learning, online learning, TV
and radio broadcasts rather than the traditional face-to-face format.

FACTS
Due to the implementation of a new normal, for every student, this has both a positive and
negative impact on their lives. The students from less privileged backgrounds have
experienced larger negative impacts due to the Covid-19 outbreak (Aucejo et al. 2020).
Reduction in family income, limited access to digital resources, and the high cost of internet
connectivity have disrupted the academic life of the students. Also, changes in daily routine,
such as a lack of outdoor activity, altered sleeping patterns, and social isolation, have also
had an impact on students' mental health. On the other hand, blended learning ensures that
the student is always engaged and in control of their own individual learning experience at
their own pace. Moreover, knowledge gained in the classroom, digitally allows students to
develop their critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills in the specialized
subject.

ISSUES
Students were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Students encountered financial
difficulties that jeopardized their education, changing living arrangements that made learning
difficult, and a lack of resources that prevented them from even logging into class online.
Students spent time and money to move classes, activities, and services online in a matter of
days, but they lost vital tuition and auxiliary revenue in the process (Sönmez, Göçmez, Uygun
& Ataizi, 2018).

PROBLEM
Students said they had issues with "implementation," failure to build communication with
friends and classmates "impossibility," "technical," and "lack of communication" relating
"instructor." In the learning environment, determining the problems is the first step toward
solving them. (Moore & Kearsley, 2012).
