INTRODUCTION

The Covid-19 Pandemic has brought so many challenges and uncertainties not

only in the Philippines but in the whole world since the pandemic led to drastic economic

and social disruption, and loss of human life. In the Philippines, a lot of enterprises such

as companies and businesses including schools and universities were shut down due to

numerous lockdowns the Philippine government implemented. And up to this day, since

the Covid-19 Pandemic started, the Philippines is grasping for economic growth as the

economy was greatly affected by the pandemic.

One of the most affected sectors in the Philippines is the schools and universities,

as it was exactly a year ago, schools and universities closed their doors for students. After

the hit of the Covid-19 Pandemic, to respond to thea need of students wanting to learn,

the Philippine government required students to study at the comfort of their own homes

through distance learning. Yet, distance learning is still being criticized as it appears that

the Philippines is not ready for it due to both professors and students having difficulty

adjusting to the new learning platform, and lack of access to the necessary gadgets and

internet connection resources like most of the students faces due to poverty. Nevertheless,

distance learning is still pursued as it is the only viable way to continue learning at a

distance. (Magsambol, 2021)

Distance learning has greatly impacted the lives of every student and teacher. It

may be their physical or mental state since it has its advantages and disadvantages. One
of the things that distance learning requires is constant communication between

professors and students. Students talking to their professors is an indicator that they are

getting along, or have a good relationship. However, talking to someone virtually or

through typed messages can cause chaos due to communication barriers and

misinterpretation of messages as it will vary how you read a certain message. Herewith,

the relationship between the professors and students is also affected because of the

conflicts that may arise on account of talking virtually or through typed messages on any

online platforms they can talk to.

Background of the Study

Living in a modern world where we can easily talk to someone virtually or on any

online platform. However, aside from its advantages, there are also disadvantages like it

might create chaos as to misinterpretation of a certain message from someone, and this is

very evident in distance learning as students will be communicating with their professors

through any online platforms. One of the importance of this research is to assess the

relationship between professors and their students because being on good terms with your

professors means being able to be productive and interested to learn and respecting them

as a professional.

Statement of the Problem

This research attempts to find evidence in the Cavite State University's HEVTED

Professors and Tourism Students’ Relationship on Academic Engagement in the Face of

Covid-19. More so, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Does limited engagement with HEVTED professors affect the BSTM students’

performance in academics?

2. How does distance learning in the face of the Covid-19 Pandemic affect the

academic relationship between the HEVTED professors and BSTM students?

3. How often do BSTM students feel stressed if they don’t have engagement or

communication with their HEVTED Professors? And vice versa.

4. How does distance learning in the face of the Covid-19 Pandemic changes the

BSTM students’ perspective when it comes to learning?

5. How does distance learning in the face of the Covid-19 Pandemic changes the

HEVTED professors’ perspective when it comes to teaching?

6. What are the limitations of BSTM students when it comes to talking to their

HEVTED professors in terms of engaging in a joking manner?

Objectives of the Study

This study entitled “Cavite State University's HEVTED Professors and Tourism

Students Relationship on Academic Engagement in the Face of Covid-19 Pandemic”

aims to:

1. To identify how face-to-face learning differs from distance learning in terms of

academic engagement;

2. To determine the challenges often experienced by both HEVTED professors and

CvSU BSTM Students in distance learning amidst the pandemic COVID-19;

3. To determine what are the limitations when it comes to being friends on social

media as it is one of the platforms HEVTED professors reach the BSTM students;

and

4. To determine the teaching approach of HEVTED professors that best suits the

academic engagement of students in the face of pandemic COVID-19?

Hypotheses

In line with the research problem stated, the hypotheses are:

1. If the limited engagement with HEVTED professors affects the BSTM students’

performance in academics, then it’s more likely that the BSTM students will have

a hard time processing and absorb the information due to lack of engagement with

HEVTED professors.

2. If distance learning in the face of the Covid-19 Pandemic affects the academic

relationship between the HEVTED professors and BSTM students. Then it's more

likely that the former BSTM students have a better understanding and interactions

with HEVTED professors than the current BSTM students.

3. If BSTM students often feel stressed if they don’t have engagement or

communication with their HEVTED Professors, then will it negatively affect the

BSTM students to do their school work? And will the HEVTED professors gonna

reach out to their students to seek clarifications?

4. If distance learning in the face of the Covid-19 Pandemic changes the BSTM

students’ perspective when it comes to learning. Then are the learnings beneficial

after they finish studying?

5. If distance learning in the face of the Covid-19 Pandemic changes the HEVTED

professors’ perspective when it comes to teaching. Then are they able to adapt and

teach their students as effectively as the way they teach before the pandemic?

6. If some of the BSTM students exceed the limitations when it comes to talking to

their HEVTED professors in terms of engaging in a joking manner, then it’s more

likely that the HEVTED professors might find it offensive and inappropriate and

it might even cause misunderstandings.

Significance of the Study

This study will be undertaken to find out the relationship between HEVTED

professors and BSTM students.

Benefiting the study are the various sector as follows:

● The HEVTED Professors - This study helps to identify and assess themselves if

they are effective professors. Also, this study will help them figure out their

strengths and weaknesses teaching in a new normal or in-facing Covid- 19

Pandemic to change or modify their attitude towards it or make some appropriate

adjustments

● The BSTM Students - This study will help the students to be aware of the things

they might be doing wrong and do some adjustments. With that, they can use this

access themselves to become better and effective students.

● The Future Researchers - The result of this study will be beneficial to them since

it will serve as their future reference in conducting research that is related to this

study.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study is entitled "Cavite State University's HEVTED Professors and Tourism

Students Relationship on Academic Engagement in the Face of Covid-19 Pandemic".

This study’s respondents are from the Cavite State University that is taking Bachelor of

Science in Tourism Management or BSTM, and the Home Economics, Vocational, and

Technical Education Department or HEVTED professors. This study focuses on

HEVTED Professors and BSTM Students’ relationship with regards to their academic

engagement in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
