CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

The proliferation of Covid-19 has resulted in a dramatic transformation of the country,

not just in terms of its demographics but also in terms of its economy.

Not only in terms of economic stability, but also in terms of educational stability. Following
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's order to suspend "face-to-face" classes in response to the
Department of Health's recommendation that the Philippines be placed under Enhanced
Community Quarantine, schools have been promptly locked for personal engagement,
transactions, and students' curricular activities. As a result, the Department of Education had to
change and create a realistic learning platform without sacrificing its goal of providing ongoing
and quality learning to its pupils while also encouraging health awareness.

Due to the health threat of the pandemic, the DepEd decided to bring education to the
comfort of their homes as they continuously developed different learning modalities to ensure
that education is accessible to all and to ensure the continuity of education. That being said.
This has had some detrimental consequences for students’ health and well-being, negatively
affecting their academic performance as well. According to students’ all accounts, this has
disrupted their sleeping patterns, created significant stress, and burned them out, causing them
to be unable to digest new information and learn.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the experiences of

students in conflict with their health and well-being as well as the impact this has on their
academic achievements from the new normal delivery of education.

This study involves students at all school levels with the intent of gaining a clearer
understanding of their first-hand experiences.

RESEARCH QUESTION

1. What are the problems encountered in modular distance learning?

2. How does the modular learning impact the mental health of students during this
COVID-19 pandemic?
3. How effective is modular learning?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study would be beneficial to the following:

1. The Teachers and Educators - This research would give teachers with much-needed
efficiency, allowing them to optimize individual learning potential. It's also a good approach to
teach students.

2. The Students - This research enables students to study at a time that is convenient for them
without interfering with their already hectic schedules.

3. Family Members - Allow them to know that their teaching methods are incredibly effective for
their students, and give them additional attention to assist them in adjusting to and coping with
their distance learning studies.

4. The Environment - This research would have a number of advantages, including lower usage
of university resources, better accessibility, and disease transmission management (COVID-19)
to

5. Future Researchers - This complete study will primarily serve as a source of knowledge or a
firm foundation for students and future research on the effectiveness of distance learning.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Distance Learning - a form of learning in which students do not need to attend a school or
college since lectures are broadcast or classes are completed via mail or the internet. Also
known as online education.

Modular Learning - offers self-paced learning modules to help students learn on their own.
Modular learning is a type of distance learning that employs Self-Learning Modules (SLM) that
are based on the most essential learning skills (MELCS) produced by teachers with the
assistance of curriculum developers.

Pandemic - is an epidemic of an infectious disease that has spread across a large region, for
instance multiple continents or worldwide, affecting a substantial number of individuals.
