Chapter 1:THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Many things have changed in the way we study today because of the
constant development of technology and what is happening around
the world when it comes to health.

If then homeschooling and traditional schooling were the only

choice of parents, now there is also blended learning approach. A
blended learning approach is any education strategy that mixes
digital and traditional teaching methods. That is, a mix of
online activities, webinars, and modules to educate students.

This study provides knowledge about how effective is blended

learning approach during pandemic to the senior high school
students of our lady of the sacred heart college. The researcher
wants to know what are the effects of blended learning approach
to the students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The World Health Organization has declared the pandemic of the

novel SARS-CoV2 infection early this year and it has now become a
major public health challenge worldwide. The infection control
and physical distancing measures are crucial to prevent the virus
from further spreading and to help control the pandemic
situation. The policy of compulsory physical distancing has been
implemented in many countries including in Philippines, resulting
in nationwide school and university closures. The teaching and
learning activities were immediately shifted to E-learning,
modular learning, and blended learning.

E-learning is defined as learning that makes use of Information

and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The incorporation of
technological resources and innovative education strategies has
transformed the teaching and learning processes. Previous studies
have shown various e-learning and online learning tools that are
effective for teaching and learning. The knowledge gain and
performance of the students as a result of E-learning were shown
to be equivalent to that of face to face methods. Blended
learning is mainly defined as the integration of classroom and
distance learning to facilitate an independent, interactive and
collaborative learning among students
This review presents research about blended learning
effectiveness. It also gives the factors that are considered to
be significant for blended learning effectiveness. The researcher
have use of Loukis, Georgiou, and Pazalo (2007) value flow model
for evaluating an e-learning and blended learning service
specifically considering the effectiveness evaluation layer. This
evaluates the extent of an e-learning system usage and the
educational effectiveness.

Studies by Leidner, Jarvenpaa, Dillon and Gunawardena as cited in

Selim (2007) shows the factors that affect e-learning and blended
learning effectiveness as instructor characteristics, technology
and student characteristics.

In addition, the study by Kintu and Zhu (2016) investigated the

possibility of blended learning and examined whether student
characteristics and student background were

Designing an effective teaching and learning strategy not only

requires the study of different pedagogies, but also the
consideration of the students’ and instructors’ current social
and technical conditions amidst the on-going pandemic.
