Chapter 1
Introduction
The year 2020 will be part of world history as Covid-19 made its impact globally
beginning in that year. The world shutdown due to the Covid-19 outbreak as we felt the effects
of the pandemic. Since Covid-19 pandemic took place, the Philippines applied strict social
restrictions. The teachers, parents and students feel such a terrifying effect as schools close and
distance learning takes place. Teachers give so much effort to provide quality education for their
students to continue learning in this difficult time. We choose online learning and modules that
parents get to the teachers or the teachers going to the students home.
This type of shutdown was challenging for education and educators. Where our country is
not adequate enough and not prepared for this kind of education. How could we pivot to online
class and teaching methods? Would our students still be learning? Teaching hasn’t been easy
during the pandemic and teaching science is no exception. It was concerning for science teachers
and educators who were accustomed to teaching using mostly hands-on inquiry instructional
methods.
Science is a subject learned by students in Elementary, Junior and Senior High School
and even in College. Science learning involves students by giving them probability to check their
own ideas and assembling their own understanding. It is necessary for a teacher to educate and
facilitate student’s learning. Hands-on experience or practical work is one of the situational
factors that is often considered as interesting and motivational to students to learn science. In this
time of Covid-19 pandemic online learning is unexpected that we cannot prepare it well. This
condition is possible for every science teacher getting difficulties because the faced challenge is
not only focused on online learning implementation but also implementation of mind and hands-
on activity in science learning.
Based on every consideration above, this research was proposed to identify different
experiences that happened to science teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research result
was expected to give proper information about teachers' experience from successful distance
learning implementation in order to be considered as an improvement of following online
learning even after the end of Covid-19 pandemic. We hope this research provides insights into
online teaching and how it affected science teachers as well as the way they preserved to serve
their students the best they could during the Covid-19 pandemic. The teachers struggled but also
learned through their experience and hopefully their experience can provide insights to the future
science teachers.
1. What are the affects to the teachers while teaching science during Covid – 19
Pandemic?
2. How could we pivot to online class and teaching methods?
3. Would our students still be learning in science without hands on learning and
laboratory experiments?
4. Is there is significant difference in the academic performance before Covid – 19
pandemic and during the Covid – 19 pandemic for the teachers?
5. Is there a significant relationship between the teacher and the student during the
Covid – 19 Pandemic academic Performance?
Hypothesis
The purpose of the study is to assess the experience of the Science Teacher during Covid
– 19 Pandemic. How it affects the teaching of Science Teacher thru online classes without hands
on laboratory classes and laboratory experiments. Did the students understands the lesson from
the online class. There is significant amount of academic performance in both sides, for the
learners and teachers.

Science Teacher
The direct recipients of the output of this research are the science teachers. Any
improvement of the teaching experience in classroom management technique that is beneficial in
2
the teaching profession during the pandemic. Through this research, science teachers and
newbies may purposefully discover and learn from this experience.
Students
This research would be beneficial to the students because they will know the experience
of their science teachers to continue teaching for their learning and alternatives for the hands-on
activities despite the distance.
The Administrators
This study will be used as the basis for implementing the curriculum and how to enhance
the learning process to adapt to the changing world in 21st century education.
The Researchers
The outcome of the study is beneficial to the present researchers to be able to learn from
the science teachers experience that we can be used as a guide in the future when it is our time.
For the future researchers may be one of the basis for new researchers that they can get some
information that might be needed in their research and some questions may possibly be answered
to this research.
Definition of Terms
Science Teacher - According to Teacher Certification Degree; A science teacher
provides instruction and guidance to help students explore and understand important concepts in
science, including problem-solving and how to gather evidence to support ideas or decisions.
Science teachers create lesson plans, present science demonstrations, and grade tests and
assignments.
