THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

The students were greatly affected by the pandemic, and many students struggled with

the changes that occurred in their learnings. Most of the students have experienced Mental

Distress due to the negative effects of pandemic on their learnings. There are two types of

Covid-19 pandemic effects, the Negative and Positive effects. Negative effects of the

pandemic make the students to struggle but despite of this the pandemic still has a positive

effect on students.

Some of the students stop their studies due to lack of resources for their Synchronous

and Asynchronous classes. Students and teachers are also having a miscommunication and

because of that it is not that easy to discuss a lesson. Therefore, students still need to review

the lessons to fully understand what have been discussed to them. Unlike before the Covid-19

pandemic, it is easy to discuss all the lessons because we are still having a Face to Face

classes.

On March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization declared that the outbreak of the

severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is the virus

responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), had reached the level of a global

pandemic. Within one week, over 107 nations around the world had closed all schools and

affected the lives of more than 862 million students around the world (Benedette Cuffari,

2021). In response to the shutdown of schools worldwide, educational institutions adopted

distance learning to ensure that students were still getting an education while the world

continued to battle COVID-19. This distance learning, which was often achieved through the

use of various online resources, was quickly initiated at all academic levels with an uncertain
duration. Although many higher education institutions were already familiar with online

teaching platforms, most teachers were left with little to no information on how to transition

from in-person teaching to distance learning (Benedette Cuffari, 2021).

As observed, most of the students living in distant provinces only a few of them have

a gadgets that they can use to study. Therefore, some of the students are not very focused on

their studies because they are not very able to communicate with the teachers. The effects and

changes brought by the Covid-19 pandemic have not been easy for the students.

In this study, the researchers aimed to determine and evaluate the effects or changes

caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on Grade 11 students' learning. The pandemic had a

negative and positive impact on the learning of students that is still be seen until today.

Hence, this study will provide knowledge to all students, teachers, parents, school

administrators, and future researchers.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine and evaluate the effects or changes caused by the Covid-

19 pandemic on the Grade 11 students' learning.

Specifically, this research aims to answer the following questions:

1). How the Covid-19 pandemic affects Grade 11 students ’learning?

2). How did the Grade11 students cope up with the effects or changes brought by the Covid-

19 pandemic?

3). What are the major changes have occurred in students' learning?
Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this study were the Grade 11 students affected by the Covid-19

pandemic. The study would focus on the effects and major changes in students' learning

caused by the pandemic. The students had different experiences during the Covid-19

pandemic, some of them didn't experience too much difficulty with the new way of learning

but the others had difficulty due to their lack of resources.

This study will be conducted on the Grade 11 students of Capas National High

School. The respondents will be given a uniform questionnaire to answer. The questionnaire

created by the researchers will be the main source of data. The researchers will be gathering a

data from the respondents through an online survey using Google Forms.

Significance of the study

This study will be significant and greatly contribute for the Grade 11 students to help

them have adequate information about Covid-19 and its effects. The findings of the study

could have a great value to the Students, Teachers, Parents, School Administrators, and for

the Future Researchers.

To the Students. The result of this study will serve as a guide to provide insights into

the difficulties of students in their learning in these days of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as

to help the students face the challenges in their learning during these days of pandemic.

To the Teachers. The result of this study allows the teachers to fully understand a

student, and they will be able to provide a good understanding of students' learning during

these days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

To the Parents. The result of this study will help them to understand the learning of

students during these days of the Covid-19 pandemic, and will also help them understand

their children's learning difficulties in these days of pandemic.

To the School Administrators. The result may serve as a guide to assist them in

developing a plan to understand and determine what they can effectively do in dealing with

students' learning difficulties in these days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

To the Future Researchers. This research can provide knowledge that they can use

as a reference and guide to improve their own studies.

Definition of terms

The following terms used in the study are defined operationally and/or conceptually

for a better understanding of the study and its purpose:

Asynchronous. Not simultaneous or concurrent in time (Merriam-Webster, 1748).

Covid-19. A mild to severe respiratory illness that is caused by a coronavirus (severe acute

respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 of the genus Beta coronavirus), is transmitted chiefly by

contact with infectious material (such as respiratory droplets) or with objects or surfaces

contaminated by the causative virus, and is characterized especially by fever, cough, and

shortness of breath and may progress to pneumonia and respiratory failure (Merriam-

Webster, 2020).

Distance Learning. Describes any learning that happens without the students being

physically present in the lesson. Historically, this described correspondence courses in which

students would communicate with their schools or teachers by mail. More recently, distance

education has moved online to include a huge range of systems and methods on practically

any connected device (ViewSonic, 2020).

Effects. The Negative and positive effects of Covid-19 pandemic to the learning of students.
Pandemic. An outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area (such as

multiple countries or continents) and typically affects a significant proportion of the

population (Merriam-Webster, 1832).

Synchronous. Existing or happening at the same time.
