CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

COVID-19, one of the most dangerous threats this world has faced in our lifetime.

People all around the world experienced the fast-spreading corona-shaped virus that affected

the lives of billions of people without any restraint. The virus was first detected and identified in

Wuhan, China, and is spreading among people globally. It was named Novel Coronavirus but

later changed into Corona Virus Infectious Disease mostly known as COVID-19. It was

categorized as an airborne disease as it can be passed on from an infected person’s mouth or

nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak or breathe. Individuals such as

kids and older people with underlying medical conditions are the most prone to the disease. But

this doesn’t change the fact that the virus chooses no one when infecting.

Several things have impacted our lives during the pandemic period, particularly for

students. Before the School Year of 2020-2021 started, the Department of Education (DepEd)

thought of a new way of teaching and learning for students and teachers who are experiencing

the pandemic. They gave the students the freedom to choose what way of learning they will

undergo according to their status in life. Staying at home while looking at their gadgets or

modules given by the school was the temporary way of learning during the outbreak of COVID-

19. This still gave the students momentum to not forget the values of going to school. Although

not all students and their own parents were able to cope with this new way of learning due to

some students lacking some technologies and gadgets to provide for the reason that other

families were heavily affected by poverty because their parents lost their jobs due to the

pandemic. This way of learning continued for 2 years, giving students time to still learn enough

knowledge during and by the end of the pandemic.

Later on, after the pandemic gradually subsided, DepEd implemented the blended

learning, which consists of two ways of learning: by combining face-to-face and online classes.

Some students still got overwhelmed and are not prepared for the face-to-face classes, which

gives rise to some students of Santo Rosario Academy underperforming and getting lazy in

attending actively in blended learning. They experienced a hard time adjusting and cope up in

the traditional way of learning due to accustoming and normalizing 2 years of the pandemic

being at home learning by doing online classes. Every student is affected by this blended

learning although it affects them in many different ways, every way has costs and benefits

throughout the year.

Finally, after observing the performance of blended learning, we noticed that some

schools are starting to go back to full face-to-face classes from having visual learning for a long

time. The new normal has a huge difference when it comes to learning from the previous year.

Through online or blended learning the students have to participate in their class via zoom

meetings, Google meet, and other types of applications that will connect the students to their

teachers. Some of the students needed to buy a prepaid Wi-Fi, some are having a hard time to

look for their signals and others are incapable of providing things such as android phones,

personal computers, laptops and even having a stable Wi-Fi connection. But of course, students

needed to do everything they could to provide what they needed just to attend their classes.

After a long time, some schools took the risk to start once again the normal way of learning: the

full face-to-face class. However, suddenly drifting into the traditional school customs from the

comfortable life of homeschooling definitely affected the students’ everyday routine including

their teachers. The sudden changes may affect both parties as they get used to being at home

and making every tasks assigned independently. The said transition of modals in learning also

cost repercussions to the life of the students and teachers but they had no choice but to
instantly recover from it as we are back to our new normal. The researcher believes that as time

goes by, they’ll get used to returning from the normal way of learning slowly but surely.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The answers to the following questions would help in this study's assessment of the specific

problem.

1. How the pandemic does affects the new normal setup of education in SRA?

2. What are the impacts that can be seen in the new normal setup of education?

3. How can Grade 11 students adjust to them returning to the traditional way of

learning?

OBJECTIVES

One must have specific goals in mind in order to identify problems and discover answers to

queries. Hence, it's important to manage to achieve the following objectives:

1. To identify the effects of learning from the pandemic.

2. To know the visible impacts of the new normal form of education.

3. To determine how the students adapt to the returning of the traditional way of

learning.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The following people will benefit significantly from this study: It aims to determine how

many people are involved with the study's topic. It's crucial to express gratitude to those who

contributed to this study.

1. Students

In contrast to previous online classes, this would enable the students to understand how

the post-pandemic impacts on their education might affect their academics.

2. Teachers

This study would give students the knowledge they require regarding post-pandemic

education so they may comprehend the perspective of students.

3. Future researchers

This study may help them in their future studies that would be beneficial about this study

matter.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The present study focuses on the impacts of post-pandemic education to the students of

Santo Rosario Academy. The participants of the study are directed only with Grade 11 students

of Santo Rosario Academy.

The foregoing study aimed to explain and identify the impacts of post-pandemic

education towards the Grade 11 students. In order to acquire and provide data, we asked for

the standpoints of some chosen students of Santo Rosario Academy, school year 2022-2023.

The number of students who participated in our survey to support this research is twenty (20).
