Chapter 1
Introduction to the Study

Chapter 1 consists of five parts: (1) Background and Literature

Framework of the Study, (2) Statement of the Problem, (3) Significance

of the Study, (4) Delimitation Of the Study, (5) Definition of Terms.

Part One, Background and Literature Framework of the Study, contains

history and the basis of the problem, presents conditions and issues that

helps to show the significant of a problem to conduct more investigation

and researches.

Part Two, Statement of the Problem, Statement of the Problem,

presents description of an issue of the study to be addressed or to be

improved upon.

Part three, Significance of the Study, discusses the importance of

research and how others will benefit from it.

Part Four, Definition of Terms, presents key and important terms in

the study that clearly ensures readers will understand.

Part Five, Scope and Delimitation of the Study, specifies the

boundaries of the Study in terms of the researcher’s decision of what to

include.

Background and Literature Framework of the Study

Reactions to the COVID-19 have caused a great many changes to daily

life in recent days. The infectious disease of the COVID-19 pandemic

affected all aspects of human life including business, research,

education, health, economy, sport, transportation, worship, social

interactions, politics, governance and entertainment (Orfan and Elmyar,

2020). In fact, the world has been stressful for everyone and the

outbreak of the virus caused problems in education. In March, schools in

the Philippines and most other nations were closed. 2020, as nations

implemented lockdown measures to prevent further viral transmission.

While Educators shifted from traditional face-to-face learning to digital

platforms for remote instruction. Many issues developed during teaching

that necessitated swift remedies and policy modifications. measures to

ensure that all students receive equal and adequate remote learning.

Although advances in educational technology in the last few decades

proved immensely useful during this pandemic (Dhawan, 2020), teachers,

students, parents, and other relevant educator faced many challenges that

they were not ready to overcome (Chakraborty et al., 2020). During the
Covid-19 pandemic, teachers were asked to transition to online teaching

with little time to prepare, becoming both instructional designers and

pedagogical facilitators using tools which few had fluently mastered.

Their lack of experience teaching in a virtual environment was reported

widely in the media, yet demand for these learning models has in fact

been increasing in the K–12 sector (Archambault & Kennedy, 2014; Rice &

Deschaine, 2020).

Students struggled to stay engaged and connected with their teachers

and peers online. Many scholars undertook broad research on educational

practices to explore how COVID-19 has impacted teaching and learning

nationally, with several organizations conducting and reporting surveys

in phases throughout the first four months of remote learning

significantly enough for the students. Goldsteinal et al. (2020),

Hamilton et al. (2020) and Wyse et al. (2020) indicated that many

students did not have access to the materials shared by their

instructors. In many cases, students even did not log into online

learning system which shows a low level of student engagement in online

learning. They also pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic devastatingly

impacted students’ learning. Many instructors have reduced the amount of

instruction and practice or the duration of the online lecture was less

than the scheduled one and the learning was not significantly enough for

the students.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

on students' learning in higher education in the Philippines. This Study

uncovers the struggles of students with regards to the new learning

modality as a result of the pandemic; COVID-19. It presents and discuss

findings and methods in which the researchers examined information

acquired from personal interviews – phenomenological study through

“thematic analysis” (Sutton & Austin, 2015).

Statement of the Problem

The major goal of this study is to ascertain the effects of Covid-19

in the Academic Learning of Grade 10 students in Lawa-an Integrated

Academic Learning?
