CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Plumeria known as frangipani, Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night to lure sphinx
moths to pollinate them. The flowers yield no nectar, though, and simply trick their pollinators.
The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their
fruitless search for nectar.

Perfumes and scented products have been used for centuries to enhance overall personal
appearance, and with previous studies showing that attractiveness could be influenced by smell,
this is the first study looking at whether odors influence the actual visual perception of facial
features or alternatively, how faces are emotionally evaluated by the brain. Perfumes can be
defined as substances that emit and diffuse a pleasant and fragrant odor. They consist of
manmade mixtures of aromatic chemicals and essential oils. Until the nineteenth century
perfumes were usually composed of natural aromatic oils. Nowadays, most perfumes are
synthetic and may contain many components.
According to the Philippine Medicinal Plants the key to 40 major plumeria cultivars
grown in Hawaii, which is based on the most prominent color in the petals: reds, pinks, yellow,
white and blends. Etymology: The genus name is in honor of the 17 th century French botanist and
Catholic monk, Charles Plumier. The Common name “Frangipani” derives from the 16th
century marquis of an Italian noble family who claimed to have invented a plumeria-scented
perfume, although it was a synthetic perfume resembling the odor of fragrant flowers. Plumeria
Obtusa is a shrub or small tree growing up to 5 meters tall. Branches are thick, succulent, widely
spaced, and covered with knobby protuberances. Stems and leaves yield a milky sap. Leaves are
dark green, leathery, obovate to oblong-obovate, up to 30 centimeters long, with conspicuous
parallel secondary veins running from the mid-vein, and clustered near the tips of the branches.
Flowers are white, five-lobed, with a yellow center, borne in clusters at the end of the branches.

Plumeria is known by other common name, including frangipani, melia (Hawaiian), and
temple tree, and has many named cultivars. It is native to tropical America. In Hawaii, plumeria
is grown as an ornamental and is not found in the wild. It has widespread use in tropical
landscapes around the world and is frequently associated with temples and garveyards. Flowers
of most cultivars are highly fragrant and bloom from March to October. The hybrids differ in
their profusion of blooms, with some producing more than 200 flowers per cluster and others
only 50-60 flowers.
Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the Plumeria obtusa (white
kalachuchi) as the main component in the production of perfume. Specifically, it sought answers
to the following questions:

1. Is Plumeria obtusa (white kalachuchi) suitable as the main component in the production
of perfume (refers to quality) in terms of the following:

1.1 Smell
1.2 Consistency

2. How long does the scent stay?

3. Is the product safe for the skin?

Significance of the Study

The result of the study is beneficial for the following:

Environment: This study will help the environment preserve its natural resources, since this
study uses white kalachuchi flower as the main component in making the natural perfume.
Future Researcher: This could help them to enhance or improve their research on making
natural perfumes using the white kalachuchi

Industries: This study will help industries produce localized natural perfume products instead
imported perfume. Wherein natural perfumes are more convenient and safer. To have a high
sales volume and earn good profits.

Users: This study will provide users with an affordable and safer naturally perfumes.

Scope and Delimitation

The research study aimed to determine the possibility of producing perfiume out of
white kalachuchi flower. This study will be conducted inside the Daanbantayan National High
School for the school year 2021-2022. The researchers limit the coverage of the study to the
testing of the effectiveness of the perfume quality in terms of smell and consistency, and the time
duration of how long this perfume’s fragrance stays on the body.

Definition of Terms
Essential oil – an essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile chemical
compounds from plants.

Oil-based – have a softer, and more natural scent. The scent of the perfume will last longer on
your skin.

Perfume – used to give a pleasant and desirable scent to a person’s body, typically with the aim
of increasing self-confidence.

Plumeria obtusa – is the scientific name of white kalachuchi. It is known as frangipani

White Kalachuchi – it has a refreshing smell like jasmine oil, and it is good in making perfume.
