Reading
J Five sentences have been removed from the story. Choose from the sentences A-H the one
which fills each gap (1-5). There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

The sun was shining and a cool summer breeze was blowing as Stan and Keith began their
forest hike. 1 Plus, since both of them lived in the city centre, they were looking forward to
enjoying some fresh air.
After they had been walking for two hours, though, they came across the fallen tree where they
had eaten their packed lunch an hour before. 2 No matter which direction they walked they
seemed to be moving in circles. Deep in the forest, they couldn’t get a signal on their
smartphones, and soon they started to feel extremely worried.
Then, suddenly, they heard a strange noise – like a growl – in the distance. At first, they thought
it was a dog, but then, from behind a tree, they could see a bear! They were terrified. “Don’t
run,” Stan whispered to his friend. “It’s the best way to survive.” 3
Then, after a few seconds, they heard the voice of a man. “Don’t worry! You’re perfectly safe!”
he said. 4 After they had calmed down and caught their breath, the man explained to Stan
and Keith that he was a park ranger from a nearby wildlife park. He told them that the bear had
escaped that morning – and that he had been tracking it all day.
Minutes later, the park ranger led the bear into a cage on the back of a large Jeep, and drove
off. 5 “Wait until our friends hear about this!” Stan said excitedly. Then, as they were laughing
and joking, all of a sudden, they realised that they were still lost in the forest!

A It soon became obvious that they were lost.

B As the bear slowly approached, they both closed their eyes, hoping for the best.
C The boys screamed at the man to stop, but he couldn’t hear them.
D There, standing in front of them, was a tall man calmly petting the bear!
E The two friends hadn’t met for months, so they were excited to catch up.
F Stan and Keith couldn’t believe what they had just witnessed.
G Unfortunately, Keith didn’t follow his friend’s advice.
H They were relieved to have found a place they recognised.
