A concrete Tied Column 500 mm by 300 mm is to be reinforced with 6-25 mm diameter bars (3 @ each of short
dimension ). The following parameters are also observed

fy = 415 MPa
fc' = 28 MPa
Clear concrete cover 40 mm.
Tie Bar Diameter = 10 mm.

Det the following using NSCP 2015.

a. The maximum designed axial load capcity of the column @ pure axial condition in KN.
b. The eccentricity along the longer dimension at balance strain condition in mm considering concrete
displaced.
c. The designed moment capacity about strong axis in kN-m when the strain in the tension steel is 200% of
yiled strain . Consider the concrete displaced in calculating forces in compression steel memberse

load capcity of the column at pure axial condition, d = 500 - Cc - diameter of stirrups - db/2
d = 500 - 40 - 10 - 25/2
 ΦPnmax  = Φ 0.80 [0.85f'c(Ag- Ast) + fyAst]
d = 437.5
Since we are analysing a tied column, reduction Solving for d'
factor Φ = 0.65 d' = Cc + diameter of stirrups + db/2
d' = 40 + 10 + 25/2

Substituting the given to the formula d' = 62.5 mm

a = 0.85(258.621)
a = 219.828 mm
NOTE:
*1 When considering concrete displaced in calculating force of compression steel member, 0.85f'c should be subtructed to the actual stress, fs, experienced by the compression reinforcements.
