What is the JLPT?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is a

standardized test to evaluate proficiency in the language
for non-native speakers. Having a JLPT certification can aid
getting into Japanese universities or getting a job relating
to Japanese. Many people also take the test simply to have
a goal to achieve.

The N5 level is basic level Japanese. If you are new to

Japanese, N5 is the level you want.

What are Kanji?

Kanji are the Chinese characters used in the Japanese

writing system. Unlike an alphabet (or hiragana and
katakana), kanji have both meaning and pronunciation(s).
To be proficient in Japanese, the student should know
about two thousand characters. The good news is, the first
hundred kanji, which are in this practice book, will allow
you to read a surprising amount of Japanese text.
Japanese Kanji for JLPT N5 WRITING PRACTICE

What is this book for?

Any beginner of Japanese wishing to master the most

important kanji. While this book does include stroke order
and basic readings/meanings for each kanji, it isn't a study
guide. It is meant to help you practice writing the
characters.
For learning Japanese kanji, we suggest our book,
Japanese Kanji for JLPT N5 found here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VSAMKA
This writing practice book follows the order presented
in the book. However, these kanji should be covered by
any beginning-level kanji textbook.

Kanji Stroke Order

There are good reasons to remember the correct stroke

order from the very beginning:

1) By following a set order, kanji will look more like it

should and therefore be easier to read.
2) You can remember new kanji better by knowing
the order to write them.
3) Kanji dictionaries often list kanji by stroke number.
4) Kanji is an art form in Japan and they will know
when you cheat!

If you only have time to remember one thing get this:

START FROM THE TOP-LEFT OF THE KANJI AND WORK

DOWN TO THE BOTTOM-RIGHT.

RULE #1 : From top to bottom

三 (the number three)

言 (to say)

RULE #2 : From left to right

州 (a (U.S. state)
And when you have both a vertical and horizontal go
horizontal first.

十 (the number ten)

But it wouldn’t be fun without exceptions!
