For the past few years, the public has become aware of the importance of having
good mental health. When someone is diagnosed with a mental condition, they can be
referred either to a psychologist or a psychiatrist. In an article written by Rehagen
(2015), he stated that "Psychiatrists and psychologists are different types of doctors
trained to help you deal with mental health issues. Both are there to talk you through
problems. They aim to provide you with the means to manage the issues in your
everyday life”. But, do people really know why psychologists and psychiatrists are two
different professions? Both psychologists and psychiatrists have similar nature of work,
but they differ in the aspect of educational background.
The similarity between psychologists and psychiatrists is the nature of work. Both
professions are trained to study and understand the mechanisms of the human brain. An
article entitled “Psychology vs Psychiatry” (n.d) stated that psychology and psychiatry
are professions that work together to investigate, identify, and treat mental health issues.
They cover a wide range of studies in normal and abnormal human behaviour.
Moreover, both professions are trained to treat similar mental conditions. For example,
Pipich (2020) stated that both psychologists and psychiatrists offer screening and
treatment for mental diseases such as mood disorders and depression, anxiety,
psychosis, substance misuse, traumatic brain injury, and a variety of other conditions.
Despite the similarity in their nature of work, psychologists and psychiatrists have a
distinct educational background. Psychologists graduated with a degree in Psychology.
On the other hand, psychiatrists have a medical degree. Psychiatrists are medical
professionals who have specialised in psychiatry, while psychologists have studied
psychology as an undergraduate and subsequently as a postgraduate (Seal, 2020). In
addition, the educational pathway to become a certified professional for psychologists
and psychiatrists are also different. For example, psychiatry places a greater emphasis
on medicine, biology, and pharmacology, whereas psychology focuses on
psychotherapy and human behaviour (Psychology.org, 2021).
In conclusion, although there are similarities in the nature of work for both
psychologists and psychiatrists, there are significant difference in their educational
background. Both professions are tasked to diagnose and treat mental conditions
suffered by patients and treat the symptoms accordingly. On the other hand,
psychiatrists are medical doctors that a specialised in psychology while psychologists
are mental health professionals that focuses on psychotherapy and counseling
treatments. Neither is “superior" than the other; however, a patient's needs and unique
symptoms may influence which type of professional is most suited to help with
treatment.
