Which job profile will I get if I join TCS via CodeVita?

For the 2020 batch, the job profiles are:

1) Assistant Systems Engineer - Trainee if you clear the 1st round of codevita interview
(interview call for everyone who had a rank ~2500). The package offered is the same
as the campus recruitment, except that you might get an early joining and fast track
ILP (Initial Learning Program).

1) Systems Engineer if you clear the 2nd round of codevita interview (interview call for
very few selected people on the basis on 1st round of codevita interview). The role
offered is a differential one and the package is almost twice as much as offered for
campus recruitment as ASE-Trainee.

How important is CodeVita for TCS in campus recruitment?

1) You will get a job offer probably before your campus placements commence. Everyone
wants to be the first guy in their batch to get a job.

2) If you crack the codevita interview, you might get a chance to get a better offer and a
role with some niche assignments. They will conduct an extra round of interview for
that. Your base job remains secure while you get a chance to get a better offer.

3) Bragging Rights. You got a job solely on your merit. You didn’t even have to wait for
your campus interviews to start. It’s something to be proud of. But yeah, there is a thin
line between being proud and arrogant. Be proud, not arrogant.

CodeVita Previous Programming Questions

1) There are 360 Longitudes on the Earth, which are equidistant vertical imaginary lines drawn on
the Earth, separated by 1 degree each from the centre of the Earth. Period of the rotation of the
Earth on its axis is 24 hours. All countries have their official times and hence time zones. UTC is
universal time coordinate which passes through 0 (Zero degrees) longitude. Time at a particular
location on Earth can be
calculated using the period of the rotation of Earth and longitude of that particular location. For
example, Indian time zone IST (Indian Standard Time) is located at 82.5° E longitude. Hence,
Indian time can be calculated as below:-
IST = UTC + (24/360)*82.5 = UTC + 5:30Hrs
Now suppose we changed the period of rotation of the earth using some imaginary power, this
will change the time at every longitude on the earth. Calculate the smallest angle between the
hour and minute hand of the clock, which shows the difference of time at a particular longitude
and the time at UTC i.e. we have to take smaller of the two angles formed between the hour and
minute hand.

2) In a country, there are 'N' slabs for Income tax which are common for all age groups and genders.
As an income tax officer, investigating a case, you have the amount of tax paid by each employee of
an organization. Considering the income tax slabs and rebates offered, you need to find the total
amount paid by the organization in salaries to the employees to match it with the amount reported by
the organization in its filed Income tax Returns. Information regarding the income tax slabs, rebate
amount and the income tax paid by each employee of the organization will be provided. Rebate amount
is subtracted from the total salary of each employee. Tax is calculated on the remaining amount. You
need to calculate the sum of the total salary paid to the employees in that year.

3): Accept a number N up to 5 digits long in the positional numeral system formed by symbols 0, 1, ...
9, A, ..., Z. Also, accept another symbol S other than zero. Separate N and S with space. Considering
N to be represented in the least base possible between 2 and 36, identify the smallest prime number
greater than or equal to N that contains at least one occurrence of S in it in base S + 1. (Refer example
section for a better understanding). The prime number should be identified to Base 10 i.e. a regular
prime number.

4): Race is generally organized by distance but this race will be organized by time.
To predict the winner we will check every 2 seconds.
Let’s say total race time is 7 seconds we will check for (7-1) seconds.
For 7 sec: We will check who is leading at 2 sec, 4 sec and 6 sec.
The participant who is leading more number of times is the winner from a prediction perspective.
Now our task is to predict a winner in this marathon.
Note:
1)At particular time let say at 4th second, top two (top N, in general) participants are at the same
distance, then, in this case, both are leading we will increase the count for both (all N).

2)And after calculating at all-time slices, if the number of times someone is leading, is the same for two
or more participants, then one who comes first in input sequence will be the winner.
Ex: If participant 2 and 3 are both leading with the same number, participant 2 will be the winner.

guarantees all the questions in the test will be from this question bank. Due to lack of time and his
laziness, Codu could only practice M questions. There are T questions in a question paper selected
randomly. Passing criteria is solving at least 1 of the T problems. Codu can't solve the question he didn't
practice. What is the probability that Codu will pass the test?

6) For enhancing the book reading, the school distributed storybooks to students as part of the
Children’s day celebrations. To increase the reading habit, the class teacher decided to exchange books
every week so that everyone will have a different book to read. She wants to know how many possible
exchanges are possible. If they have 4 books and students, the possible exchanges are 9. Bi is the
book of i-th student and after the exchange, he should get a different book, other than Bi.

7) Alexander The great, while roaming the stretch of Turkey, came across a wise man. He asked the

(n1 * a + n2 * b = x). But there is a catch, 'x' is the smallest positive integer which satisfies the equation.
Can you help Alexander become the greatest?

8) CODU loves to play with a string of brackets.

He considers string as a good string if it is balanced with stars. A string is considered as balanced with
stars if the string contains balanced brackets and between every pair of bracket i.e. between opening
and closing brackets, there are at least 2 stars(*) present. CODU knows how to check whether a string
is balanced or not but this time he needs to keep a track of stars too. He decided to write a program to
check whether a string is good or not. But CODU is not as good in programming as you are, so he
decided to take help from you. Will you help him with this task? You need to print Yes and number of
balanced pair if string satisfies following conditions(string is good if it satisfies following 2 conditions):
1. The string is balanced with respect to all brackets.
2. Between every pair of the bracket, there are at least two stars.
However, if the string doesn't satisfy above conditions then print No and number of balanced pair in the
string as an output.

9) Market Research firm is surveying popular brands. The person who has the best pulse of the survey
population will be rewarded by the firm.
The survey comprises of N questions was taken by M participants, not at the same time but one after
the other. There is no correct answer since it is a survey of brands. Each question can have only four
options (1,2,3,4). Most expected answers to different questions are used as a template to measure
brand popularity. Think of this as a default answer sheet where the question paper is the Survey
'0' represents no answer to a question. Thus, it means that the participant has skipped answering that
question.

Right Answer:
For a particular question, the highly chosen option until that point of time is treated as the correct answer.
If multiple options have the same count, then out of those options the one which was chosen recently
is treated as the right answer.
Score of a Participant:
One point will be awarded for each right answer. No negative points for wrong answers.
Instant Result:
This is shared to the Participant instantly after completion of his/her exam. (this is equal to the number
of right answers)
Final Result:
Only the final top scorer (TOPPER) is announced along with his score.
Note:
At the end of all M Participants completing the exam, the final right answers get decided. Based on
these answers score of each candidate gets recalculated and the one with the highest score is the
TOPPER!!! If more than one Participant gets the top score then the one among them who attempted
the exam first is treated as TOPPER.
10) In a board game (12x12) of Angels vs Devils, various devils try to kill an angel whose aim is to get
across the board. The person playing for the devil can place 3 devils at any cell on the board, each devil
has different powers. The starting point of Angel can only be on the border but not corners of the board
and will be provided as input. He will walk in a straight line (horizontal or vertical only) across the board,
one cell every second. For example, if he is placed on the left border he will move right towards the right
border. Starting points and types of devils will be provided as input, their powers are as follows:
OGRE (O): He cannot move but he can kill with his breath. His powers change with time.
ꞏ In 1st second Ogre can kill an angel if the angel reaches Ogre’s location
ꞏ In 2nd second Ogre can kill angel surrounding up to 8 neighbouring cells (see diagram)
ꞏ In 3rd second Ogre can kill an angel if the angel reaches Ogre’s location
ꞏ In 4th second Ogre is powerless i.e. even if angel reaches Ogre’s location, Ogre cannot harm him
XiXi (X): He has the power to kill an angel only if both the following conditions are true
ꞏ He is active

ꞏ Angel is on same-coloured cell as XiXi
XiXi is active only for 1 particular second in this game. XiXi is on cell D8. What this means is – XiXi will
be active only in 8th second and if and only if the angel is on a blue-coloured square at 8th second, XiXi
can kill the angel.
ZeeSNAKE (Z): He leaves a poison trail and moves in 'Z' shape. His first move is 'down' and then 'right'
and keeps on making a trail in that order until he reaches the border. If he reaches the 'Bottom Border'
he starts moving 'up' instead of 'down' and vice versa. If he reaches the 'Right Border' he starts moving
'left' instead of 'right' and vice-versa. Angel coming on the poison box will die immediately. Trail created
by him till 12th second.
You need to provide the box number on which the Angel gets killed, or output 'SS' if Angel successfully
crosses the board.

11) N monkeys are invited to a party where they start dancing. They dance in a circular formation, very
similar to a Gujarati Garba or a Drum Circle. The dance requires the monkeys to constantly change
positions after every 1 second. The change of position is not random & you, in the audience, observe a
pattern. Monkeys are very disciplined & follow a specific pattern while dancing.
Consider N = 6, and an array monkeys = {3,6,5,4,1,2}.
This array (1-indexed) is the dancing pattern. The value at monkeys[i], indicates the new position of the
monkey who is standing at the ith position. Given N & the array monkeys[ ], find the time after which all
monkeys are in the initial positions for the 1st time.

12) Given a number representation, we can identify the base that would result in the least value for
the representation. Consider the following examples:
1. For the number representation 11, the least possible base is 2 and hence the least possible value is
3 in base 10.
2. For 17, the least possible base is 8 and the least possible value is 15 in base 10.
3. For 1729, the least possible base in 10 and the least possible value is 1729 in base 10.
Consider doing this base reduction iteratively till a fixed point is reached as shown in the following
example: Let's start with number representation 72. The least possible value of 72 is in base 8 and is

58 (represented in base 10). Iterating, the least possible value of 58 is in base 9 and is 53 (base 10).
In the next iteration, 53 (in base 6) becomes 33. Then, 33 (base 4) gives 15; 15 (base 6) gives 11; 11
(base 2) gives 3. Finally, 3 remains 3 (in bases 4 and above).
Write a program to accept a number representation, perform the successive base reductions as above
and print the resulting final number.
13) The problem solvers have found a new Island for coding and named it as Philaland.
These smart people were given a task to make the purchase of items at the Island easier by distributing
various coins with a different value. Manish has come up with a solution that if we make coins category
starting from $1 till the maximum price of the item present on
Island, then we can purchase any item easily. He added the following example to prove his point. Let’s
suppose the maximum price of an item is 5$ then we can make coins of {$1, $2, $3, $4, $5} to purchase
any item ranging from $1 till $5.
Now Manisha, being a keen observer suggested that we could minimize the number of coins required
and gave following distribution {$1, $2, $3}. According to him, any item can be purchased one time
ranging from $1 to $5. Everyone was impressed with both of them.
Your task is to help Manisha come up with the minimum number of denominations for any arbitrary
max price in Philaland.

14) This is a typical chess game where your opponent first places the random number of Knights,
Rooks, Bishop and Queens on an N*N chessboard and then you have to place your king safely on a
chessboard such that it should not be under attack by any piece.
Note: if you don't know how to play chess and how chess pieces move, please refer below link (you
can concentrate only on how the above-mentioned pieces move).
Given an N*N chessboard with K number of Knights, R number of Rooks, B number of Bishops and Q
number of queens. Your task is to find out the number of squares on the chessboard such that your
King is not checked by any of your opponent's pieces.

15) A square glass sheet of size 'S' cm fell and broken down into N+1 pieces.
A man collected the broken pieces and he is trying to arrange the pieces to get the original shape. He
found that exactly one piece is missing. To find the exact position of the missing piece, he noted down
all (x,y) coordinates of each broken piece. Please help him to find the coordinates of the missing piece.
Note 1: The input order of corners of known glass pieces are in the clockwise direction starting from
the corner having least X value. If more than one corners having the same least X value, then start
from the corner having least X and least Y value.
Note 2: The corners of missing glass piece should output in the clockwise direction starting from the
corner having least X value. If more than one corners have the same least X value, then start from the
corner having least X and least Y value.

16) Infinity War is Over. Thanos has successfully collected all the Infinity Stones and wiped out half the
population of the universe. Now the world depends on the remaining Avengers to bring back their loved
ones. To get the last chance of defeating Thanos, the Avengers has put together a team of its best
warriors to try to steal the Infinity Gauntlet and restore order to the universe. The warriors must be put
in pairs into their warships and sent out. Obviously, the team size is even. Each warrior in the warship
needs to work well with his partner in the warship, and the chemistry between them is important. Hence
the Supreme Commander has requested all the warriors to give a list of the remaining warriors in the
team in the order of their preferring to work with them. Using these lists the Supreme Commander
needs to create a set of suitable pairs of warriors, with each warrior getting a partner. A set of pairings
of warriors is not suitable if two warriors exist who both prefer each other more than their existing
partner. The Supreme Commander recognizes that there can be more than one set of suitable pairs of
warriors. He ranks the warriors in descending order of competence so that the most competent are at
the top. He has directed you, his chief analyst, to create a
a suitable set of pairings that lets the most competent warrior to partner someone as high in the list of
preferences as possible, and then the next most competent warrior to work with as high a person on
his list as possible, and so on.
Please write a program to create a suitable set of pairings that meets the Supreme Commander’s
directions. If no such pairing exits indicate that.

INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE -1 (Yash)

I recently appeared for the TCS interview process. I had an All India Rank of 49th in CodeVita
2019 which is the flagship coding contest of TCS. Around the top, 7000 rank holders from all
over India got a direct interview through Codevita.

Round 1 - Online Coding Test

I have solved 5 questions out of 6 and secured 49th rank.

Got selected for direct interview.

Round 2 - Online Technical Interview

There were two panellists and out of which only one was asking questions.

Questions were:-

X - Hello Yash

Me - Good afternoon sir.

X - Do you remember the names of the programs that you have solved?

Me – I answered the questions with names of all the programs that I solved and also and also
that 1 question too that I couldn’t.

X - Can you tell me how did you solve those questions?

INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE – 2 (Goutam)

I attended TCS Codevita 2018 Interview this year at Gitanjali park, Kolkata and fortunately got
through. Much credit goes to my super-friendly interviewers. Interviewer: Please have a sit
Goutam.

[Wished them Good afternoon and sat]

Interviewer: So tell me something about yourself.

[Was ready with this answer but was super nervous since it was my first job interview]

Interviewer: (immediately sensing my panic in my introduction) are you nervous?

Me: A bit sir since this is my first job interview. (With a smile)

Interviewer: Don't be nervous we'll give you ample opportunities to prove yourself.

Interviewer: So you told you worked with Incident Management in your TCS Internship can you
draw the Incident cycle?

[Damn, I read the whole ITIL documentation but carelessly neglected this thing. However, I kind
of drew what I remember and confidently explained to them what I drew and also told them I might
be missing some states but these are the primary ones. They nodded and some questions
followed regarding it, I answered them all]

Interviewer: So what languages you use generally?

[Now I knew many apart from C, C++ and Java-like python, JavaScript and others but there was
the need of the presence of mind. Only mention those whose top to bottom is known theoretically

So I told them, sir, I use C++ in competitive programming for the robust STL library support that I
get and otherwise I know C and Java.

Interviewer: Since you mentioned OOPs as a subject in your CV. Can you explain encapsulation?

Me: Told them a simplified version of Encapsulation like Encapsulation is wrapping up data as a
single unit for protection of data from outside sources… (blah blah.. something like that). Then
tried to explain them with an example of a car and it's a gear mechanism that user can only use
it but cannot change from outside. User doesn't know it's proper implementation.

Interviewer: Can you explain with code?

Me: Implemented Getter and setter function in my class of java.[They were satisfied]

Interviewer: Do you know what is a constructor?[Told them]

Interviewer: What is the return type of a constructor?

Me : (trying to figure out what he's implying it can be any form int to float then suddenly
understanding the intentionally misleading question) Constructor doesn't have any return type sir.
(with a smile)

[He with a smile corrected my partially correct answer]

Interviewer: Coming back to your Codevita performance. You said you solved only one problem
why is that?

Me: Sir, there was too many maths problem only one problem with ad-hoc which I did. (Quickly
explained to them what I did get the chance to explain them)

Interviewer (sarcastically) so you said you couldn't solve because there was maths problem.
Why you don't like maths? You also said in your introduction that you are too adaptative and a
quick learner as strength. Then why only one problem?

Me : (confidently with a smile) no sir, maths in school and maths in competitive programming are
two different things I believe. Solving a differentiation problem in maths is comparatively easy but
solving a competitive coding problem needs months of practice for a skilled coder and right now
my focus was into more algorithmic paradigms like Dynamic programming, Backtracking, etc so I
was not ready for maths kind of problems however I did figure that I need to quickly dive into that
section.[Satisfied]

[followed some more questions regarding my second web development internship]

Interviewer: So Goutam where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Me : (ready for this kind of question) Sir, I see myself as a lead developer in a renowned MNC
like TCS with enough knowledge that my organisation seeks from me to fulfil my responsibilities
expected.

Interviewer : (suddenly) why lead developer why not an independent developer?

Me : (trying to tackle this sudden attack) because I find enough leadership skills in myself.

Interviewer: Can you explain an incident where you found leadership skills in you?

Me : (somewhat confidence broken) yes sir, I was the team lead/spokesperson while my
internship in TCS. I successfully led my team and completed the project assigned with an 'A'
grade.[Sensing my nervousness, the HR grill started]

Interviewer: What are the qualities of a good leader?

Me : (sensing things going out of hand due to my nervousness) sir, a good leader should always
be with the team, look where the team is lacking on an individual basis and also do what is needed
to mend that.

Interviewer: (with a grin) so Goutam let's say there's a situation where you are the leader and the
project under you completely fail due to a single person who was incompetent. What would you
tell to your immediate supervisor would you point him out

Me :(completely sensing the grave I'm digging myself into. So tried to neutralise the situation.) Sir,
I would try to recover the project as far as possible at first and then try to figure out what went
wrong in him. If it's his incompetency of course I would point him out that this guy needs remedial
but the failure will be an equal responsibility of the whole team as we're here as a team. (Smiling
which is now totally fake and intense tension building inside)

Interviewer: (getting an added thing to grill) so you said failure is an equal responsibility of all that
goes for success too? I mean if somebody outperforms in your team he won't get the credit?[Now
carefree as I was done with enough grilling, confidently]

Me: Sir, I firmly believe Success is sweet to be distributed among all. So yes, it will be a joint
celebration as a Team (focusing on the last word). Having said that, the man of the match always
gets his due credit that'll be ensured. (Full smile)

[A full smile on the other side too]

[Some more questions from I2 regarding hobbies taken care of Formality questions like do you
have any questions for us]

Interviewer: Thank you for coming to TCS Goutam it was nice talking to you. (Extends hand for
shaking) [I2 does same. Done and dusted!]

[They will make you sit for sometime after that and then if you're selected they'll call for document
verification and elaborate the Service agreement. I was rebuked for not carrying originals. Avoid
repetition of this mistake.]

Cheers!
