from the word
“mbatik”
means “to
draw or write
with dots”.

TWO MAIN CHARACTERISTIC
OF BATIK
1. Its Specific Design or Motifs
– Every motifs are named and having
philosophical meaning
– Motifs consist of: ornament and isen-isen

2. Processing Technique
– Resist dyeing
– The use of malam or wax for covering part
of fabric
– The use of canting and/or cap
– The use of natural dyes

BATIK CONCEPT
• “Malam” (wax) is used to cover part of
motifs which is desired uncolored
• “Malam” is a hydrophob material, which
could prevent the dyestuff absorption
• Coloring the open part of the cloth
• Remove the “malam” away of the cloth
using hot boiled water
