Monsoon Advisory

Every year, the Indian subcontinent receives the south west bound winds in
early June. According to the annual data from the Meteorological Department,
the average rainfall in India is 118 cm. The four-month long monsoon, (June-
September) accounts for 75% of rainfall in India. Just one month in, India has
already received 37% excess rainfall registering 13.78 cm precipitation against
the normal of 10.05 cm as of 23 June 2021. India's high risk and vulnerability is
highlighted by the fact that 40 million hectares out of a geographical area of
3290 lakh hectares is prone to floods. Along with heavy rainfall and floods, the
Indian peninsula is vulnerable to get hit by tropical cyclones, with an average of
two-three cyclones making landfall in India each year.

Monsoon Dos
– Familiarize yourself with places in your neighbourhood prone to flooding.
– Get your vehicle serviced to ensure that wipers, brakes, tires, headlights, etc. are in
good condition.
– Drive slowly. When it rains, oil and grime make the roads slippery, reducing traction.
– Clean stagnant water regularly and avoid contact with contaminated water.
– Stay away from loose power lines and contact the city municipal corporation.
– When walking through clogged water, use a stick or umbrella to feel the ground for
potholes, open drains, etc.
– Keep portable and working power banks, flashlights, and extra batteries.
– Check weather updates and notifications before leaving a safe place.
– Ensure placement of mosquito nets.
– Keep doors and windows closed, especially during dawn and dusk.
– Avoid eating outside food especially uncovered food items.
– Always keep a first-aid box in the car.
– Be aware of any traffic delays and plan in advance.
Monsoon Don'ts
– Avoid driving during a heavy downpour as visibility is significantly poor.
– Do not park under trees or near electric poles, to avoid causing damage.
– Do not let water accumulate in containers in and around the household. It will prevent
the breeding of dengue spreading mosquitoes.
– Avoid eating at roadside stalls.
– Do not eat salads and raw vegetables without a thorough wash.
– Avoid entering an air-conditioned room just after getting wet in the rains.
– Avoid travelling to low lying areas where a flood like situation is likely to persist.

Recommendations
– People in the impacted areas are advised to tie down loose items.
– It is recommended to adhere to precautions issued by the weather department and
the administration.
– People are to avoid venturing out to low-lying areas or areas close to the coast in the
region.
– Stay cautious and abide by all the instructions/advisories issued by the authorities.

According to the state rainfall map published by the Indian Metrological Department depicting rainfall figures till February 2021, the southern
part of India received rainfall in large excess i.e. more than 60%. However, the eastern and north eastern region of India saw large deficiency.
