Question 1.
The magnetic moments of a few transition metal ions are given below:
Metal ion Magnetic moment (BM)

Sc3+ 0.00

Cr2+ 4.90

Ni2+ 2.84

Ti3+ 1.73

(atomic no. Sc = 21, Ti = 22, Cr = 24, Ni = 28)

Which of the given metal ions:

(i) has the maximum number of unpaired electrons?
Ans(i) Cr2+ exibits highest unpaired electron as 3d4.

(ii) forms colourless aqueous solution?

Ans(ii) Sc3+ exibits colourless solution in aqueous solution as it doesn’t have any
electron d electron in his subshell.

Question 2
(i) Name the element showing the maximum number of oxidation states among the
first series of transition metals from Sc (Z = 21) to Zn (Z = 30).
Ans(i)Mn(manganese) shows highest oxidation state among 3-d orbital (+2---+7).
(ii) Name the element which shows only +3 oxidation state.
Ans(ii) Sc(Scandium ) exibits only +3 oxidation state.

Question 3
Which of the following cations are colored in aqueous solutions and why?

Sc3+, V3+, Ti4+, Mn2+

(At. nos. Sc = 21, V = 23, Ti = 22, Mn = 25)

Ans(3)Sc3+ __ 4s03d0 as d-orbital is empty , it is colourless

V3+__ 4s03d2 as d-orbital is having 2 unpaired electron , it undergoes d-d
transition.
Ti4+__ 4s03d0 as d-orbital is empty , it is colourless
Mn2+__ 4s03d5 as d-orbital is having 5 unpaired electron , it undergoes d-d
transition.

Question 4:
Cr2+ is reducing in nature while with the same d-orbital configuration (d4), Mn3+ is
an oxidizing agent. why?

Ans(4) Cr2+ is reducing agent as its configuration changes from d4 to d3, when it is

oxidized to Cr3+ .The d3 configuration have a half-filled t2g level which is very
stable. On the other hand, the reduction of Mn3+ to Mn2+ results in the half-filled
(d5) configuration which has extra stability hence Mn3+ acts as oxidizing agent.

Question 5:
The metallic radii of the third (5d) series of transition metals are virtually the same
as those of the corresponding group members of the second (4d) series. Why?

Ans(5) The atomic radii of the metals of the third (5d) series of transition elements
are virtually the same as those of the corresponding members of the second (4d)
series due to filling of 4f-orbitals which have poor shielding effect (lanthanide
contraction)
