FACTORS INFLUENCING CAREER CHOICE AMONG GRADE 10 STUDENTS TOWARDS
THEIR SHS STRAND SCHOOL YEAR 2018 – 2019

CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Education has launched its K-12 Basic Education Program, comprehensive reform of

its basic education. Through this reform, the Philippines is catching up with global standards in secondary

education and its attaching a high value to kindergarten. The structure, curricula, and philosophy of the

education system are undergoing reform and improvement. The key points of the new policy are

“preparation” for higher education, “eligibility” for entering domestic and overseas higher educational

institutions, and immediate “employability” on graduating, all leading toward a ”holistically develop

Filipino”

For every students, choosing the best course can be a difficult decision as well as thinking about their

future career. Some students know exactly which course to pursue while others do not know. Brought by

such changes and development, Grade 10 students are expected to choose their strands regarding of the

program they will going to take in their college career.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Republic Act No. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013) refers to Senior High school

(SHS)

or the Grade 11 and 12, the last two years of the K-12 program that DepEd has been implementing since
2012. Students begin to study in SHS the subject that will introduce them to their referred career path.

High school in the old system consisted of first year to fourth year. What corresponds to those four years

today and Grade 7 t 10, also known as Junior High School (JHS). You will have to complete he

kindergarten,

Grades 1 to 6 (elementary), Grades 7 to 9 (Junior High School), and Grades 11 to 12 (Senior High

School)

in all 13 years before you can receive a High school diploma. Career can be defined by the total pattern of

one’s activities held during a person’s lifetime. It can also determine the individual personality because it

describes who the person is. Therefore, choosing an appropriate career is very important for every

individual (NCDA 2003) as this help to determine their future. However, with the advent of information

technology, the emergence of post industrial revolution and job competition career choice turn out to be a

complex science. Thus, to cope with the evolving socio-economic conditions, there is a must for students

to make an exhaustive career research and career planning to determine their career selection (Wattles

2009). Throughout the journey, it is believed that students determine their career choices based on several

factors. According to Kerka (2000), student career choice is influenced by availability of information,

cultural identity, finance, globalization, interests, personality, role model, self-concept, social support and

socialization while for Bandura et al., (2001) an individual’s career choice is influenced by their

educational attainment, the context in which they live in, their personal attitudes and social contacts.

Moreover, Perrone et al., (2001) find that role model supportiveness and quality of relationship contribute

to career choice of students, while Hewitt (2010) posits that individual career choice is influenced by their

educational choices, income, some follow their parent careers, other opt to follow their passion regardless

of the income obtained while others consider the extrinsic factors or intrinsic factors.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researcher has decided to conduct this study because as a student in Bancal, I noticed that many

of the Grade 10 students are having a difficulty in choosing their strand for Senior High School.

This study was informing the reason why there are many Grade 10 students who are struggling

regarding of choosing their strands, considering both the profiles of students’ respondents and the

different related factor influencing career choice influencing among Grade 10 students towards their

Senior High School strand.

towards their Senior High School strand.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents be described as to;

a. Age

b. Civil Status

c. Gender

2. How are the related factors that influencing attitudes toward the strand be described?

a. Family factor and Peer factor

b. School factor

c. Teacher factor

3. How is the attitude towards choosing a strand be described?

4. Is there a significant difference on the perception toward related factors: family and peer, school,

teacher influencing attitudes towards the strand when grouped according to all profiles?

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This research study selected the Grade 10 students, who are enrolled during the school year 2018-

2019 in Bancal Integrated School.

This study centered on the profile variables as to their age, sex, and civil status. It likewise deal on

determining the attitude towards related factors as to family, peer, school, and teacher factors that

would influence the decision making of Grade 10 students.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

FOREIGN STUDY
A short definition of career can be the development and actions taken by a person throughout his/her

lifetime, expressly related to that person’s occupations. A career not only refer to one’s position but also

englobed the job held, titles earned, and work accomplished over a lengthy period. Thus, career selection

is an extremely important decision that impacts an individual’s entire future. Therefore, effective career

exploration is a must as the individual actively seeks out information from various professionals such as

counsellors. This process can be stressful for the young adult, but variables that influence career

exploration in adolescents should be identified and acknowledge the factors underlying career choice led

to mounting interests to educators, counsellors, ministers, and social scientists. Some people maintain the

young adult does not exercise career choice, but their socio-economic environment determined their

career choices, while others agree that the individual who exert a choice can either leads to a wise and

fulfilling career choice or an unsatisfying choice, it is useful to study the viewpoints of economists,

sociologists, psychologists, and among others. While economists argued that the opportunities of the

labor market strongly influence the vocational choices of people, sociologists pointed out that the forces

in our society are the major determinants of vocational choices. The most significant factor in career

choice is the birth right of the individual which tells about the individual family, nationality, race,

residential district, social class and to large extent the educational and cultural opportunities for the

person. The range of occupations chosen by an individual is largely determined by the status expectations
of his social class (Friesen 1981). Moreover, psychologists found that the inner world of the individual

and personality theory which comprise of psychoanalytic, trait, self and development theory play an

important role in vocational choice. In addition, structural theorists are personality theorists who view

human personality as a structured whole with distinctive attributes. These attributes are the characteristics

of the individual and are organized in a unique manner. It consists of psychoanalytic theory (the

expression of the personality of the individual), self-concept theory (an attempt made by the person to

express his sense of who he is in the job and in life generally (Friesen 1981). The individual attempts to

live out in his job by his aspirations, dreams, hopes, and values. The degree of job satisfaction of the

individual obtained from his job relates how happy he is) and nee theory (relate to personal needs both at

the conscious and unconscious level. According to Friesen (1981), developmental theorists believe that

career choice is expressed by its total personality and it occurs over a progressive order which can be

viewed as a longitudinally event. Four life stages namely growth, exploration, establishment, and decline

were proposed. The exploration phase occurs during high school and college where the young adults

explores numerous career alternatives and must decide on his future career path. In short, the individual’s

environment, opportunity and personality will determine how the latter career choices.

all of the country have this system except for the Philippines, the President want that the educational

system much suitable for the new students in which students can have their job when they finish the K-12.

In the K-12 system, the studies are being enhance. This K-12 system have lengthen the year for High

School students that it adds two more years by which we call the students from Grade 11 and 12 as Senior
High School (SHS) and some know this more likely as college students. In the K-12 system, you have 4

tracks to choose for these are academic, technical vocational livelihood, sports and arts design track. This

about how can you get a job when you finished this K-12 system? You can choose different tracks in the

K-12 system by which involve your skills. This system that students who can’t go to college can have a

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
The researcher design used for this study was a qualitative approach. The data is collected

through a survey answered by 20 Grade 10 students of Bancal Integrated School. The questionnaire

allowed the researcher to mark and analyze the Grade 10 students’ profiles, the decision making attitude

of Grade 10 students towards choosing SHS strand as consistency, and the decision making styles of

Grade 10 students.

A total of 20 Grade 10 students were selected as respondents, 15 female and 5 male. Some are

dependent decision makers while others are avoidant and spontaneous when it comes to decision making.

The results may have connections to their personal career plan, career advocacy of the school, social

and they found it better for them. From the findings, it also showed that some of the Grade 10 students are

uncertain as to which SHS strand they are going to follow.

RESPONDENTS AND LOCATION

The researcher chose randomly 30 Grade 10 students of Bancal Integrated School for the study. This

was practical to the researcher since he belonged to this class, would have no difficulty in talking with his

classmates, and would save time, energy, money, and efforts.

Purposive sampling will use to select samples based on their characteristics, knowledge, and

experience.
