 Femur
 Longest, largest, heaviest
 25% of body weight
 Articulates above with the acetabulum to form the hip joint
 Below with the tibia and patella to form the knee joint

 Head forms about two thirds of a sphere and articulates with the acetabulum
 Orientation: Superiorly, anteriorly, medially
 Fovea Capitis a small depression in the center of the femoral head (attachment of ligaments)
 Blood supply of head of femur
 Adult: Medial and lateral femoral circumflex artery
 Child: Obturator artery, blood supply to the head of femur and it enters the bone at the
fovea

 Neck connects the head and shaft, passes downward, backward and laterally makes an angle of
125 degrees (slightly less in female)
 Passage of common peroneal nerve
 Injury of the nerve can cause cross leg palsy/foot drop
