What’s In:
1) Our current model of the atom can be broken down into three constituents parts –
protons, neutron, and electrons. Each of these parts has an associated charge, with
protons carrying a positive charge, electrons having a negative charge, and neutrons
possessing no net charge.
2) Atoms are composed of three main subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and
electrons. Protons and neutrons are grouped together in the nucleus of an atom, while
electrons orbit about the nucleus.
3) The atoms of different isotopes are atoms of the same chemical element; they differ in
the number of neutrons in the nucleus.

What I Have Learned:

1) The chemical formula is used to describe the types of atoms and its number in an
element or compound. Chemical formula is very important when trying to find information
about chemical compounds because they tell us about the elements present and the
number of atoms in that compound.
2) In simple terms, a compound is a substance made up of a definite proportion of two or
more elements. With the help of Chemical formulas, one can check the number of atoms
and elements in the compound. Chemical Compounds and Common Names lists the
different compounds, common names and chemical formulas.
What I Can Do:

Chemistry at Home!
After a long night of sleep, it’s time to get up and enjoy your day by first brushing your teeth with
toothpaste and rinse it with water (H2O). Next, we’ll try to cook breakfast. Since we are
Filipinos, we love to have rice in our plate which is a good source of carbohydrate. And to have
a healthy lifestyle, instead of using MSG, we’ll just use salt (NaCl) to season our “ginataang
monggo” as our viand. After eating, since you are a good son and daughter of your parents you
will help in washing all your dirty clothes using laundry bleach (HClO). After working, I think you
deserve to be treated with snacks. So here are pineapple, orange, and mango fresh fruits that
are rich in Vitamin C (C6H8O6), and pancake made with flour and sugar (C12H22O11). After a
long day, it’s time to sleep now, but before that, here’s your favorite yogurt which is rich in
calcium (Ca). Have a good night!

What I have Learned:

1) An isotope is one of two or more species of atoms of a chemical element with the same
atomic number and position in the periodic table and nearly identical chemical behavior
but with different atomic masses and physical properties.
2) Radioactive isotopes have many useful applications. In medicine, for example, cobalt-60
is extensively employed as a radiation source to arrest the development of cancer,
Uranium-235 is used for nuclear fission and as a fuel in nuclear reactors, An isotope of
iodine is used in the treatment of goiter.
3) Yes, Anthropologist Vicky Oelze uses strontium isotope analysis to match human
skeletal remains to their place of origin
