MATHGEEK 2020:

1. Ram who lives in Mumbai has decided to attend the SUM-IT workshop at ISI
Kolkata. He took a flight from Mumbai to Kolkata, and he returned with the same
flight back to Mumbai with same average speed.Consider the flight did not stop at
any location and followed the same path while return. Which journey will take more
time ?

Code 1: Both the journey took the same time.

code 6: Mumbai to Kolkata took more time.

Code 3: Kolkata to Mumbai took more time.

The code number will be the code to go to next level.

2. Let us define Mahalanobis points as the points in R^2 of the form (x_1,x_2)
where x_1,x_2 \in Q. What is the maximum number of Mahalanobis points can be there
in a circle in R^2 whose centre is a non-Mahalanobis point. Your answer is the key
to the next level.

Ans: 2

3. Let us start with a problem, given a 3 x 3 grid with only dots,

o o o
o o o (one gif will be
provided here as an example)
o o o

You need to connect all the dots with connecting four lines (Yes it is possible!).
Let us define Bhaskaracharya function, as B(n)=#(minimum connecting lines required
to connect n x n grid with dots). Calculate, $\sum_{k=1}^2020 B(k)$ , which will be
the key to the next level.

Source: http://vixra.org/pdf/1307.0021v4.pdf
Solution: B(n)= 2(n-1), when n>=3, but B(1)=1 and B(2)=3. Need to calculate the
rest part.

4. Crypto:
E D W A R D
x R
-----------
M U R R O W

All the letters represent an unique number from 0-9, where all the letters
represent different numbers. Your code to the next level is R E W A R D and if
there are more than two solutions your code will be 99999.

ans: E=4, D=8, W=6, A=1, R=2, O=5, U=7, M=9

5. For the allocation of duties of SUM IT, the mathematic competition for the high
school students organised by the student body of ISI, seniors asked for the list of
students along with their batch of 5 consecutive rooms. The senior was aware that
there were 5 batches(i.e. B1(1), B2(2),B3(3),M1(4),M2(5)) and the 10 students
(i.e.Ramanujan(2),Bhaskaracharya(71),Aryabhatta(19),Rao(31),Satyendra(23),Varadhan(
7),Brahmagupta(67), Mahalanobis(47), Bhargava(43),Vashishtha(59)) with 2 students
sharing a common room and each students of the room have a unique batch (Consider
all the batches are covered in the 5 rooms). But a student cleverly gave few clues,
can you help the senior to identify their batch and the students.
Clues:
1. Bhaskaracharya is not in M1.
2. Aryabhatta is adjacent to Satyendra.
3. B1 is not immediate left of M2.
4. Ramanujan is not in B2.
5. Brahmagupta is in M2.
6. Varadhan is immediate left of B2.
7. Ramanujan and Satyendra are roommates.
8. Bhargava and Vashishtha are roommates.
9. Ramanujan is immediate left of Bhaskaracharya.
10. Bhargava is to the right of Mahalanobis.
11. B2 is in the middle of the 5 rooms.
12. B1 is to the right of B2.
13. Varadhan is not a roomamte of Bhaskaracharya.
14. If Rao and Aryabhatta are room mates then B3 is not adjacent to B1.
15. Rao is left to Brahmagupta.

At first figure out the students in each room along with their batch, then for the
first room( i.e. leftmost room) multiply the numbers of the students and then
similarly carryout multiplication for all the rooms. After the multiplication, you
would get 5 numbers which you need to concatenate as per the order from the
leftmost room to the righmost room, after which you would get a single number. Then
concatenate the given batch numbers in the same order (i.e. from the leftmost room
to the righmost room). After which you would get 2 numbers which is the
concatenated number of the students and the concatenated number of the batch. At
the end you need to concatenate those 2 numbers, first would the concatenated
students number and then the concatenated batch numbers. In this way you would get
a single number which will be the key for the next round.
