Problem 5:
A prestressed concrete T-beam has 1200-mm flange width, 100-mm flange thickness, 250-mm web width, and
600-mm web height measured from top of the flange. The beam is simply supported and has a span length of
7.5 m. It is superimposed with continuous vehicle traffic equivalent to 40 kN/m live load. The only service dead
load is the weight of the beam, which is equal to 2,300 kg/m3. The parabolic prestressing tendon has
eccentricity of 150 mm at midspan, and is subjected to an initial prestressing force of 1,300 kN. The tendons
were designed to have a maximum prestress loss of 12% of the initial prestress in steel. Determine the flexural
stress distribution at midspan during transfer stage, and when the member is under full-service load using the
conventional method. Furthermore, if specified concrete compressive strength is 34 MPa, and strength at the
time of transfer is 28 MPa, is the beam safe?
