2.2 Flange Design Strength


Allowable Stress - flange material: Sf  450MPa
Allowable stress is decided with following consideration:
The code of ASME B16.5 does not mention the ASTM A 694 F52 on the it's flange material class.
The code of MSS SP 44 does not cover the pipeline flange with size below 12in, and also in this code on Annex
A gives the value of allowable stress without consider the material grade i.e. F36, F42, F52 etc.
The code of ASME section II part D is referenced by code of ASME section VIII, does
not cover material spec ASTM A694.
The code of ASTM A694 gives the value of SMYS and SMTS only.
The code of ASTM A694 on section 5.1.2 mention that this material shall be suitable to be welded to
API standard 5L pipe.
By the ASME 31.8 , allowable hoop stress and combine stress = 0.5*SMYS, flange allowable stress is
taken 0.5 of SMYS also.
