In Lord of The Flies by William Golding, Piggy proved to be the best leader through his

character traits of intelligence, loyalty, and carefulness, which gave the children the best chance
to survive on the island. Piggy’s best leadership trait is intelligence, which makes him an ideal
leader for the kids on the island. In the story when we are first introduced to Piggy, he spotted a
conch shell in the water and came up with the idea to blow into it and use it to call meetings and
initiate order. He specifically said “ Ralph we can use this to call the others. Have a meeting.
They’ll come when they hear us.” Well, why does intelligence make him a good leader? Piggy
will think things through before actually acting on them, he will look at the positive and negative
effects on situations before choosing which decision will be the best decision to act on. Well
how does this help the little children on the island? Piggy being intelligent helped with shelters,
the conch, and the signal fire. A lot of the really good ideas that were originated came from
piggy.

Piggy’s second best leadership character trait is loyalty, which Piggy shows a lot throughout the
story with Ralph. In the story we see that Piggy never betrays ralph although ralph betrays him,
he sticks by his side and even comforts him with his thoughts about being stranded on the
island in chapter 8 of the story jack and ralph’s conflict deepens which causes jack to take some
of the people to his side and split them up, and although this happens Piggy stays by ralphs
side despite the fight and the separation of the two boy. Why is this a good trait for a leader?
This is a good trait for a leader because it lets you know that he will never abandon you even
during the hardest of times. Well how does this help the little children? I wouldn’t say that this
trait affects or helps the kids but it definitely favors Ralph whether he noticed the loyalty or not.

Piggy’s third best character trait is his carefulness which is shown quite often through different
chapters of the story. When Piggy and Ralph were on the island they discovered the ocean(or a
pool of water) to which Ralph just threw his clothes to the side and jumped in while Piggy took a
more gentle approach. In chapter 1 page 3 we see Piggy carefully place his sock in his shoes
and set them to the side and then just dip his toe in the water to test the temperature, while
Ralph on the other hand did the opposite. Why is this a good leadership trait? Being careful is a
great leadership trait because it helps things be taken into precaution and well thought out
instead of just jumping the gun and doing what you feel in the moment which could lead to
something very dangerous and unnecessary. How does this help with the little children? In my
opinion it didn’t benefit these kids because nobody listened to him. But piggy being careful did
influence Ralph to start being more cautious and careful.
In conclusion, who do I think would be the best leader for the other boys and little children on
the island? I vote for piggy because he has the intelligence and the carefulness and loyalty that
most leaders lack and I feel like if piggy was the leader they would have survived longer than
they did. How can this story work in the real world? Well I think people should be more careful
and intelligent like piggy is in this story because being smart and careful can help you in the
long run avoid many problems that most people face on a daily basis.
