Business Mathematics – Grade 11

Quarter 1 – Module 5:

CHANGING FRACTION TO DECIMAL AND

PERCENT AND VISE VERSA

Introduction

This module is designed to help you think and develop Business mathematical ideas. There
are times when you will feel confused, and there are times when it will be necessary to work
on an idea over a period of several days. You will encounter many interesting and
challenging problems in this module.

Objectives:
 Express fraction to decimals.
 Convert fraction to percent.
 Change decimal to fraction.
 Express decimal to percent.
 Convers percent to decimal.
 Change percent to fraction.
 Apply knowledge of conversion to business problems.

Vocabulary List:

 Fraction – represents a part of a whole.

 Numerator – is the number above the fraction bar.
 Denominator – is the number below the fraction bar.
 Percent – is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100.

Getting Ready:

Direction: Change the following fraction to percent, decimals to fraction, and percent
to fraction.
1. Fraction to percent

2. Decimals to fraction
0.25

3. Percent to fraction

Starting Point:

Converting Fraction to Decimal

Steps

 Step 1: Find a number you can multiply by the bottom of the fraction to make it 10, or
100, or 1000, or any 1 followed by 0s.
 Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by that number.
 Step 3. Then write down just the top number, putting the decimal point in the correct
spot (one space from the right hand side for every zero in the bottom number)

Example: Convert 3/4 to a Decimal

Step 1: We can multiply 4 by 25 to become 100

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 25:

×25

34 = 75100

×25

Step 3: Write down 75 with the decimal point 2 spaces from the right (because 100 has 2
zeros);

Answer = 0.75

Example: Convert 3/16 to a Decimal

Step 1: We have to multiply 16 by 625 to become 10,000

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 625:

×625

316 = 1,87510,000

×625

Step 3: Write down 1875 with the decimal point 4 spaces from the right (because 10,000 has
4 zeros);

Answer = 0.1875

Example: Convert 1/3 to a Decimal

Step 1: There is no way to multiply 3 to become 10 or 100 or any "1 followed by 0s", but we
can calculate an approximate decimal by choosing to multiply by, say, 333

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 333:

×333

1
 = 333999
3

×333

Step 3: Now, 999 is nearly 1,000, so let us write down 333 with the decimal point 3 spaces
from the right (because 1,000 has 3 zeros):

Answer = 0.333 (accurate to only 3 decimal places !!)

 Divide the top of the fraction by the bottom,

 Then multiply the result by 100 and read off the answer !

Example: What is 58 as a percent?

Multiply 5 by 100 first, then divide by 8

500 ÷ 8 = 62.5

Add the "%" sign:

62.5%

Example 1: Convert 3/4 to a Percent

Step 1: We can multiply 4 by 25 to become 100

(why 25? because 100 divided by 4 is 25)

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 25:

×25

34   = 75100

×25

Step 3: Write down 75 with the percent sign:

Answer = 75%

Example 2: Convert 3/16 to a Percent

Step 1: We have to multiply 16 by 6.25 to become 100

(why 6.25? because 100 divided by 16 is 6.25)

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 6.25:

×6.25

Step 3: Write down 18.75 with the percentage sign:

Answer = 18.75%

Change decimal to fraction

Steps

 Step 1: Write down the decimal divided by 1, like this:   decimal1

 Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point.
(For example, if there are two numbers after the decimal point, then use 100, if there
are three then use 1000, etc.)
 Step 3: Simplify (or reduce) the fraction

Example: Convert 0.75 to a fraction

Step 1: Write down 0.75 divided by 1:

0.751

Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 100 (because there are 2 digits after the decimal
point so that is 10×10=100):

× 100

0.751 = 75100

× 100

(Do you see how it turns the top number

into a whole number?)

Step 3: Simplify the fraction (this took me two steps):

  ÷5   ÷5

75/100 = 15/20 = 3/4

  ÷5   ÷5

Answer = 3/4

Note: 75/100 is called a decimal fraction and 3/4 is called a common fraction!

Example: Convert 0.625 to a fraction

Step 1: write down:

0.6251

Step 2: multiply both top and bottom by 1,000 (3 digits after the decimal point, so
10×10×10=1,000)

625/1000

Step 3: Simplify the fraction (it took me two steps here):

  ÷ 25   ÷ 5

625/1000 = 25/40 = 5/8

  ÷ 25   ÷ 5

Answer = 5/8

Express decimal to percent

"Percent" means "per 100" so:

Multiply the Decimal Number by 100, and put the "%" sign so people know it is per 100.

Example: Convert 0.125 to percent

Multiply 0.125 by 100:

0.125 × 100 = 12.5

Put the percent sign:

0.125 × 100 = 12.5%

Answer 0.125 = 12.5%

Example: Convert 0.35 to percent

Move the decimal point two places to the right: 0.35 → 3.5 → 35.

Add a % sign: 35%

Answer 0.35 = 35%

Example: Convert 0.985 to percent

Move the decimal point two places to the right: 0.985 → 9.85 → 98.5

Answer 0.985 = 98.5%

You may also need to add zeros on the right to move the decimal point:

Example: Convert 1.2 to percent

Move the decimal point two places to the right: 1.2 → 12. → 120.

Answer 1.2 = 120%

The easy way to divide by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places to the left, so:

Example: Convert 8.5% to decimal

Move the decimal point two places to the left: 8.5 → 0.85 → 0.085

(Note how we inserted an extra "0" as needed)

Answer 8.5% = 0.085

Example: Convert 250% to decimal

Move the decimal point two places to the left: 250. → 25. → 2.5

Answer 250% = 2.5

Change percent to fraction

To convert a Percent to a Fraction follow these steps:

 Step 1: Write down the percent divided by 100 like this: percent100

 Step 2: If the percent is not a whole number, then multiply both top and bottom by 10
for every number after the decimal point. (For example, if there is one number after
the decimal, then use 10, if there are two then use 100, etc.)
 Step 3: Simplify (or reduce) the fraction

Example: Convert 11% to a fraction

Step 1: Write down:

11/100

Step 2: The percent is a whole number, go straight to step 3.

Step 3: The fraction cannot be simplified further.

  Answer = 11100

Step 3: Simplify the fraction (this took me two steps, you may be able to do it one!):

75/100   =   15/20   =   3/4

  ÷5   ÷5

Answer = 3/4

Note: 75/100 is called a decimal fraction and 3/4 is called a common fraction !

Example: Convert 62.5% to a fraction

Step 1: Write down:

62.5100

Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 10 (because there is 1 digit after the decimal place)

×

10

62.5/100   =   625/1000

×

(See how this neatly makes the top a whole number?)

Step 3: Simplify the fraction (this took me two steps, you may be able to do it one!) :
