Introduction
This module is designed to help you think and develop Business mathematical ideas. There
are times when you will feel confused, and there are times when it will be necessary to work
on an idea over a period of several days. You will encounter many interesting and
challenging problems in this module.
Objectives:
Express fraction to decimals.
Convert fraction to percent.
Change decimal to fraction.
Express decimal to percent.
Convers percent to decimal.
Change percent to fraction.
Apply knowledge of conversion to business problems.
Vocabulary List:
Getting Ready:
Direction: Change the following fraction to percent, decimals to fraction, and percent
to fraction.
1. Fraction to percent

2. Decimals to fraction
0.25
3. Percent to fraction
40%
Starting Point:
Steps
Step 1: Find a number you can multiply by the bottom of the fraction to make it 10, or
100, or 1000, or any 1 followed by 0s.
Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by that number.
Step 3. Then write down just the top number, putting the decimal point in the correct
spot (one space from the right hand side for every zero in the bottom number)
×25
34 = 75100
×25
Step 3: Write down 75 with the decimal point 2 spaces from the right (because 100 has 2
zeros);
Answer = 0.75

×625
316 = 1,87510,000
×625
Step 3: Write down 1875 with the decimal point 4 spaces from the right (because 10,000 has
4 zeros);
Answer = 0.1875
Step 1: There is no way to multiply 3 to become 10 or 100 or any "1 followed by 0s", but we
can calculate an approximate decimal by choosing to multiply by, say, 333
×333
1
= 333999
3
×333
Step 3: Now, 999 is nearly 1,000, so let us write down 333 with the decimal point 3 spaces
from the right (because 1,000 has 3 zeros):

316 = 18.75100
×6.25
Answer = 18.75%
Steps
0.751
Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 100 (because there are 2 digits after the decimal
point so that is 10×10=100):
× 100
0.751 = 75100
× 100
÷5 ÷5
75/100 = 15/20 = 3/4
÷5 ÷5
Answer = 3/4
0.6251
Step 2: multiply both top and bottom by 1,000 (3 digits after the decimal point, so
10×10×10=1,000)
625/1000
÷ 25 ÷ 5
625/1000 = 25/40 = 5/8
÷ 25 ÷ 5
Answer = 5/8
Multiply the Decimal Number by 100, and put the "%" sign so people know it is per 100.

Answer 0.125 = 12.5%
Move the decimal point two places to the right: 0.35 → 3.5 → 35.
Answer 0.35 = 35%
Move the decimal point two places to the right: 0.985 → 9.85 → 98.5
Answer 0.985 = 98.5%
You may also need to add zeros on the right to move the decimal point:
Move the decimal point two places to the right: 1.2 → 12. → 120.
Answer 1.2 = 120%
The easy way to divide by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places to the left, so:
Move the decimal point two places to the left: 8.5 → 0.85 → 0.085
Answer 8.5% = 0.085
Move the decimal point two places to the left: 250. → 25. → 2.5
Answer 250% = 2.5
11/100
Answer = 11100
