MPM1D POINTS OF INTERSECTION AND LINEAR SYSTEMS

Linear equations can form systems of equations.

The _________________ of a linear system is the point (x, y) where both lines intersect.

The point must satisfy both equations. We call that point ________________________.

Ex. 𝑦   =  2𝑥   +  10

𝑦   =   −3𝑥

The common point belongs to both lines which means will verify both equations

Ex. (-2, 6) is a solution to the above linear system.

Check:

Example 1: Solve the linear system by graphing. Check your solution.

 𝑦     = 𝑥 +  4

𝑦   = −  𝑥 + 1

Example 2: Mike wants to join a ski club for the winter. He is considering two options.

Option 1: $50 per day and no registration fee.

Option 2: $40 per day and a $100 registration fee.

a) What is the point of intersection of the two graphs and what does it mean?

b) Look to the left of the intersection point. Which plan is cheaper and why?

c) Look to the right of the intersection point. Which plan is cheaper and why?
