2. A 300-N force P is applied at point A of the bell crank shown.
(a) Compute the
moment of the force P about O by resolving it into horizontal and vertical components. (b) Using the result of part a, determine the perpendicular distance from O to the line of action of P. Analyzing what we’re asked, we need to get the Moment of Force P about point O, using horizontal and vertical components, and we also need to determine the perpendicular distance from O to the line of action of P. We first get the Px and Py (horizontal and vertical components of Force P) by simply using trigonometry. Px = 300sin (30) since Px is opposite angle 30°, and Py = 300cos (30) since Py is adjacent angle 30°. We get the lx and ly components of the triangle formed from point O to A, now that we got the lengths, we can now solve for the Moment. We assume that counterclockwise is positive. Since this is problem is just in 2D, we can use M = Fd. We can get M1 = (Px)(lx), and our answer should be negative as it moves to clockwise direction. We can get M2 = (Py)(ly), and our answer should be positive as it moves to counterclockwise direction. We can now get the total moment Mo = M 1 + M2, considering the signs. We get a positive answer so it means it moves in a counterclockwise direction. To get the perpendicular distance we simply manipulate the equation M = Fd since we both have values for M and F, we then get 68.37 mm as our answer.
