What to do:

Think of yourselves as Disaster Managers (DMs). As such, your job is to prevent another disaster from
creating massive damage like super typhoon Yolanda (international code name: Haiyan) that hit Leyte
and its neighboring provinces on November 8, 2013. As you have learned, Typhoon Yolanda was one of
the deadliest typhoon that hit the Philippines as recorded in modern history. It caused socio-economic
setbacks, physical damages, psychological trauma, environmental destruction, and others. The
typhoons energy was unprecedented-it just had so much to unleash. Prior to its onset, its coming and
the expected strength of its wind were announced. Yet, it created massive negative impacts on the
Filipino people, especially those who were directly hit by the disaster. The magnitude was so huge that it
moved the whole world.

Your task now is to gather as much information as possible about typhoon Yolanda in order to fully
comprehend its implications. Know the events prior to, during, and after it slammed into the country.
Information such as where it originated, the path that it took before entering the Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR), where it proceeded after leaving the country, strength before and after hitting
Visayas, should all be very helpful. Find out as well the measures undertaken by the government, the
announcements disseminated to the public, and the different agencies involved before, during, and
after the disaster.

Based on all information collected, make an analysis of why such tremendous damage was wrought by
typhoon Yolanda to the people, their properties, and their surroundings. Prepare a presentation aimed
to help instill the values of disaster preparedness, accurate information, and efficient communication.
You will be evaluated based on your presentation, the accuracy of your findings, and the quality of your
analysis.
