LESSON RESEARCH TOPICS

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

1. demonstrate understanding of the range of research topics in the area of
inquiry;
2. discuss the guidelines in formulating a research title; and
3. formulate a title of quantitative research.

DISCUSSION

Creswell (2014) defines a research topic as “the issue or problem leading to the
need for the research.
A research topic or problem is an intellectual stimulus calling for an answer in
the form of a scientific inquiry.

SOURCES OF RESEARCH PROBLEMS

 an interest in a particular field;
 discussions with peers;
 a feeling of discomfort;
 perceived difficulties;
 a gap between theory and practice;
 a procedure that requires advanced equipment;
 a daily experience;
 a pattern or trend;
 a literature review.

CONSIDERATIONS IN FORMULATING RESEARCH PROBLEMS

A. External Criteria
1. Novelty – the newness and freshness of a topic and its variables
2. Availability of subjects – study participants are within reach
3. Administrative support – the availability of the aid or assistance
4. Availability and adequacy of facilities and equipment
5. Ethical considerations – activities are acceptable, legal and
morally right
B. Internal Criteria
1. Experience, training and professional qualifications
2. Motivation, interest, intellectual curiosity, and perceptiveness
of the researcher
3. Time factor
4. Costs and returns
5. Hazards, penalties, and handicaps

STEPS IN DETERMINING THE VARIABLES OF THE STUDY

1. determine the issue or concern;

Example: Difficulty of Transportation

2. identify concepts that can be a cause or result of the issue;

Tardiness Absences Lack of Interest

Parental Concern Academic Issues

DIFFICULTY OF
Allowances TRANSPORTATION Time Factor

Performance Attitudinal Concerns

Management Styles
3. select concepts that influence or are influenced by the issue; and

Example: Parental Concern and Academic Issues

4. come up with a temporary title

Example: Parental Concern, Difficulty of Transportation, and
Academic Issues Among Senior High School Students

CHARACTERESTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH TITLE

1. predicts the content of the research paper
2. interesting to the reader
3. reflect the tone of the writing
4. contain important keywords

SELECTED GUIDELINES IN THE FORMULATION OF A RESEARCH TITLE

1. The title must contain the following elements:
a. the subject matter or research problem;
b. the setting or locale of the study;
c. the respondents or participants; and
d. the time or period when the study was conducted.
2. The title must be brief and concise as possible.
3. Refrain from using the term as “Analysis of”, A Study of”, “An Investigation
of” and the like.
4. Use no punctuation at the end of a title.
5. Avoid unnecessary words and jargons.
6. It should not be longer than 15 substantive words.

EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH TITLES

1. Frequency of Tardiness and Level of Support of Parents Among Senior
High School Students in Selected Private Schools
2. Effects of Values Formation Program on the Habit-Forming Behavior of
Honors Students
3. Homework, Reading Ability, and Exercises in English: Their Influences on
Outcomes in Communication Skills
4. Work Values and Job Satisfaction Level of Tech-Voc Graduates in
Selected in SKILLS, INC.
5. Building Life Skills for Persons with Disabilities: Effectiveness of the
Interventions
Topic selection involves the tedious process of
establishing what a research wants to
investigate. Topics are selected from review of
initial literature, observation of a
phenomenon, and consideration of what
interests the researcher.
