Who is Abbas Ibn Firnas

Abbas Ibn Firnas was a famous muslim who lived in

Cordoba, Spain. He was born during the Islamic Golden age
in 810AD and passed away in 887AD. He was a world
renowned inventor, engineer, astronomer, mathematician
and scientist. Firnas invented many things as we will see
throughout this presentation. But his grand invention was
the flying machine.

Early Life
As a child abbas was always curious to know about stuff he
loved to create and break them apart after. In addition, one
of his favourite hobbies were to play music. Young Abbas
studies medicine and astrology but was more intrigued in
engineering and making his own innovative inventions. He
also had loved poetry while he was growing up.

The flying machine

He had always been curious if a man can fly and he would
be fascinated the way birds fly. So, one day, he started
working to make a flying machine. He thought that if he can
make wings like a bird and put the wings on his back, he
could fly. So Abbas Ibn Firnas used silk, bamboo, rope and
eagle feathers and he created his flying machine. In the year
875AD, he went up on a mountain near Cordoba and he
wore his flying machine. Everyone from Cordoba was
watching. He jumped off the mountain and he was flying.
Everyone was amazed, and his invention was a success.
Although, his landing wasn’t as much of success. He landed
to the ground very hard but no too hard and he suffered
minor injuries. Later, he realized that he forgot to add a tail,
which would have helped in a smooth landing. In the end, he
made a successful flight making him the first aviator/pilot in
history.
How did his invention effect the
modern world
Abbas ibn Firnas’s flying machine was a big achievement in
aviation. The wing-shaped design of his flying machine
inspired inventors to continue making newer and better
flying machines using his wing-shaped design. Today, you
can see Abbas ibn Firnas’s wing design in modern airplanes.
Without his flying machine, we would have not been where
we are in aviation in today.

What was his other inventions

Abbas ibn Firnas had made many inventions, rather than the
first man to fly. For example, he was an intelligent
astronomer that made a planetarium in which planets can
be orbited and revolved around other planets, he was found
with crystals since a child and he managed to make drinking
glasses. In addition, he also tested out different ocular
lenses with glass. He knew how to melt sand to glass and he
made colourless glass. Another invention was that he made

Fun facts
1. An airport in Iraq, a bridge in Spain, and a Moon crater
is named in the honour of Abbas ibn Firnas.

2. He invented contact lenses

Quote
This is one of the most vital philosophical quotes that there
is in the world. Abbas was musing for a long time about
thinking whether there will be an invention that will fly better
or more efficiently than a goose wing. Well the answer to
that is “yes”. Airplanes are one of the vehicles/machines
that has already culminated/ reached to its highest point in
history. And his flying machine was in the shape of a gooses
wing in a way which gave the lift required for his machine to
fly successfully. In transition, Abbas was really a sharp-
witted person for musing about this.
Conclusion
Abbas ibn Firnas one of the most influential person in Islam.
He had inspired many young people that wanted to become
pilots. He was an intelligent person who made many
inventions that were indeed really helpful till this present
day. He deserves his merit and Inshallah he will get one of
the highest places in Jannah including ourselves. Jazakallah
for listening we hope you enjoyed our presentation and had
learned some crucial parts of Abbas’s life.
